Lexus vs. Germans

I was having a conversation the other day with my sister, who currently drives a CLS55 AMG. She informed me that she's considering trading in her CLS for a LS460. I told her there's not to many cars out side of her price range, and if I was her I'd take a series look at the S550, A8L, and the 7-Series before making such a major purchase..

So my question is, do you consider Lexus a crediable alternative to the big 3?
If so which segment are they most competitive?

Re: Lexus vs. Germans

Honestly, their strong suit is the IS. Unlike the GS and the LS, it is a VERY original car and the bang for the buck it offers is unmatched by the Germans.

Re: Lexus vs. Germans

I think LS is what made Lexus what it is today - a good sensible value alternative to the Germans.

Re: Lexus vs. Germans

For me it was the LS untill they changed it for the new one, who has received very deceiving reviews from everybody and has a quite generic interior. Therefore I think their strongest car is now the GS, almost as good as the LS but much cheaper. This one is a real threat for the Germans.

However, without diesel and with a ridiculous boot in hybrid, it's not that serious in Europe.

The IS seems not to be really on-par with the Germans.

The RX is a serious competitor on the other hand, in hybrid model, it may be the most "serious" of all the Lexuses against the Germans... Because the hybrid is to be considered against a diesel, especially by people who don't really know what hybrid means but are lead by the advertisments...

Re: Lexus vs. Germans

I reckon it is the LS, it does have a price advantage and a very comparable, or even exceed comfort levels of Germans, and of course driving dynamics isn't as important in this category. Furthermore in dense Asian cities at least, you drive a big car because the comfort it offers more than other things, you just don't have the chance to excel its driving characteristics, and with a price advantage (in asia at least) and lower running costs of Lexus, I reckon it is the category that rivals the Germans the most.

Re: Lexus vs. Germans

If there's one Lexus I see more than the others in the lineup then it must be the LS. Not a rare sight here in London, it seem that it has been recognized as one of the big boys.

How is IS not on par with the Germans? Yes, the performance and handling is a bit short of 335, every other measure it is right up there with the Germans and add value to the equation and it has the Germans licked.

Toyota/Lexus is my least favorite brand, but that doesn't change reality.

Re: Lexus vs. Germans

When the question is "Lexus strongest segment?"

a. Why is None an option?
b. Who are the 5 who are so neck deep in the German supremacy BS to actually opt for it?

I agree. From my experience the only department where the IS is lacking is steering feel. Other than that it's an honorable alternative to the Germans. The same can't be said for the GS which is one of the most boring cars I've ever driven.

Very few lexus cars in Norway, thank good.
Looks ugly and when Toyota is behind it must be the crappest of the crap.
