But the GTI is still the better buy for someone looking for plenty of fun in a small and affordable package.

The flexibility times will be interesting, hope AMS or Sport Auto will test the 123d

you get a 120d for less money, 177hp/350nm. Easy to chip as well and still less cash than a 123d.

I think that the 123d engine will opens up the world of diesel engines to younger people. It's really remarkable. I'm not a diesel fan but that engine is awesome. It would be cool if BMW stuck it inside that Mini.

Not a great fan of either, but I'll take the Volkswagen.

I have a weak spot for the GTi, it is really a cool car. But not cool enough this time. Pitty they did not spice up the 1-series with the M-sport package but it is still a better looking car on the whole than the Golf.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, I voted for the VW on the basis of looks alone.

I drove the 120d when the car was launched, in September 2004. I must admit that it is a great car with this motor. More than enough torque and power when you drive through the city. Driving at the motorway was no problem too, I overtook a guy in 750i E32 and he looked with amazement (He has probably seen the 1 Series for the first time :P). I wish I had enough money to buy a 2nd hand 120d...
