I've driven an S2000 - it's really great and eminently the better track car. Its whack-job power delivery post 6000 rpm is one of motoring's most magical experiences! BUT, for on-road useability and seamless power delivery, the 2.5 Z4 has it licked. You're often found wanting in the S2000 because a gear that's instinctively right for a certain corner suddenly becomes one ratio too high... it's a difficult car to master if you're on a road less familiar.
The Boxster? Only driven the 3.2 litre - that was one of the highlights of my driving life. I have no experience with the 2.7 litre though, save for the fact that down here, once optioned in keeping with the badge, the Boxster 2.7 is significantly more expensive than a Z4 2.5i.
So, the Z4 with its emotional appeal clinches it for me in its price range. The engine of the Z4 really does compliment the top-down driving experience. My only gripe is the ride bestowed by the early edition run-flats, hopefully that's a situation that's improving as the months go by.
