Originally Posted by BMW_Dude Well I have seen it, and it looks alright, nothing special, but that is what I thought of the W220! | You know that is very telling, it was my same reaction in late 1999 when I saw the W220 for the first time.
I hope this is not the same case, but back then, they (the press) were saying the new S-Class was the most luxurious, advanced, and sophisticated sedan in the world, and here I was sitting inside an S500, then test driving it, then parking it next to a W140 inventory (they still had a few brand new ones left), and I'm going, what's wrong with the picture??
As for looks, the new (back then) W220 looked more 'friendly' compared to the W140, according to one of the salesmen.... the car was a wee bit smaller than the W140 'Too Big' S-Class but it was 'nicer' and more 'friendly'! that hurt.
Well, they are starting to do the same this time around and claim the W221 to be the most this and that.... looks alone from pictures tell me this is not the imposing, 'get out of my way' traditional look of a Benz sedan (maybe in person it will, I hope). From the pics, it still looks too 'nice'....
Perhaps this is a necessary change in order to stay competitive with the new Asian market... if that's why they are making MB's look the way they look now... oh well at least the Bavarian house still has that 'imposing' look that makes you go 'wow'.
Just my $0.02

My vote went to the S and I will tell you why.
As far as design is concerned the new S class takes the cup of tea. I mean this car is so self-sufficient(looks like it can run the world) that if you have a political or elite position you want to be driving it because it feels that you will pave the road for yourself.
I have not driven it, and I have not driven the other two either. So my opinion is rather flawed, but then again it is stabalized by the fact that it is purely based on what I have read, compared, and seen(design).
I to MB for a job well done on the new S | | | | | Devotee

The A8 has the most official and authoritative presence of the three IMO, the S class is the most eye-catching and dynamic - as for the 7er - I'm waiting for it's successor to completely upstage the other two soon. | | | | | Me for President

I saw a black S-class some days ago and I was disappointed. Its weird but the car look better on pics than in person. However I like the interior and want the interior in my facelifted 7-serie
I love this pic
but no doubt the S-class is a king, better history and reputation than A8 and 7-series but it doesnt mean its a better car. | | | | | Trendsetter

I love that black 7er - nobody can say that it doesn't look spectacular in that photograph.
Also, don't underestimate the history of Audi and BMW - they might not be as well established in the American psyche as Mercedes-Benz, but they also have pretty illustrious histories - Audi made head-of-state limousines in the 1930's
1929 Audi Type R 19/100 PS Imperator
