Exclamation South African Spec Golf 1 Fresh and Back again in 2008.! - 01-20-2008, 08:44 AM

VW expands its Citi
If you’ve been waiting to hear that Volkswagen SA has finally discontinued its CitiGolf… wait a little longer. The Uitenhage-based manufacturer has dropped its previous 1,4-litre carburetter-fed entry-level model, and four new Citi designations, available immediately in South Africa.

Making up the new range is the TenaCiti, CitiStorm, CitiSport and CitiRox. The entry-level TenaCiti 1,4i comes equipped with a 55 kW powerplant that produces 117 N.m torque at 3 500 r/min. The CitiStorm 1,4i, CitiSport 1,4i, and CitiRox 1,4i all have power outputs of 62 kW at 5 500 r/min and 124 N.m torque at 4 400 r/min. For those in search of more power to cruise through the city, there is the option of the CitiSport 1,6i and CitiRox 1,6i. These models are able to deliver 74 kW at 5 400 r/min and 140 N.m at 4 400 r/min.

The CitiSport 1,4i and 1,6i, and CitiRox 1,4i and 1,6i come fitted with a stiffened suspension, central locking and an alarm/immobiliser as standard. For entertainment, an MP3 compatible CD player is standard in the CitiSport.

According to VWSA, the CitiGolf range now complies with the 2008 EU2 emissions requirements that came into effect in January 2008. For this, changes have been made to the exhaust (through the fitment of catalytic converter and oxygen sensor), fuel and engine management systems.

Prices:
TenaCiti 1,4i R72 950
CitiStorm 1,4i R76 150
CitiSport 1,4i R82 200
CitiRox 1,4i R89 300
CitiSport 1,6i R92 350
CitiRox 1,6i R97 450

MAY GOD FORGIVE VW SOUTH AFRICA!!..KILL THE DAMN THING ALREADY..

Wow, and I thought we had primitive Golfs in Canada. We've got a City (yes with a "y" here) Golf, but it's a Golf Mk.4 with a mutilated front.

But a Golf 1!? That's really milking an old design!

Why the hell a Golf 1??

The Mk IV to keeps costs down, I can understand, even the Mk III could make some sense (the Mk IV, with its finish and construction, must be significantly more expensive to produce than the III), but a I???

Is there any explanation? And is it really cheap to buy there, compared to other cars? Does it sell well?

Are other manufacturers doing the same thing?

That said it does not look that old I find...Surprisingly "not-that-bad-looking" in these pics! But seriously, a Mk I...

VW are truly making lots of profit....its also 1 of the cheapest cars here and has a huge following and is cult/classic status.....

btw, $15000 for a mark 1 is not cheap alot....

Have they made any improvements on the safety of the vehicle over the years?

At least it's a whole lot faster than the Tata Nano.

I have an affection for these old things... it's good that there's something in this world which defies the trends of fashion.

For those who don't know, in South Africa they also sell the current Golf MKV but they also sell this first generation Golf which is renamed to Citi. Over the years this car was kept up to date by adding new components (interior, switches, electrical components etc.) while keeping its original looks and also keeping the prices low.

And according to the currency, the prices starts around €7.000 and not at €15.000 as stated above.

I agree with you MikeJ. This car has character and it personally moves me more than the current VW Fox. It's the model which started the success story for the VW Golf.

It's also a nice beginners car, reliable, simple technology and cheap to maintain. Old car/model and technology doesn't mean the car is useless for nowadays everyday use. I could see why people are still buying these cars. Personally I wouldn't mind owning one, guess I'm one of the few who would say don't kill it.
It's funny that this car could be your first car but also could possibly bring back old memories of your father's or mother's first car.
Nostalgia.......old with a new heart...I like it....
