I'm trying to decide whether the Jetta would be a good buy.

I'm thinking of the Jetta 2.0 TFSI and getting a sunroof and heated seats for options (plus 17" wheel).

It says it gets 200 h/p which is nice but does it really give you that much power? I really don't know the relation between torque and h/p but if this 200 h/p is similar to other 200 h/p machines, this will be one awesome buy.

Any suggestions? I was looking at the TDI model, but the engine was kinda too noisy for my likings and 150 h/p...

I think the Jetta is a very good buy and the 2.0 Turbo version is a perfect buy if you want some speed. It does 0-100km/h in 7.5 which I would say is pretty adequate. But if I were you I would take a look at used car market. You should be able to find a one year old Audi A4 1.8T for the same price of a brand new Jetta 2.0 FSI, not to mention an Audi A3 sportback.
The advantage with buying a one year old car is that they are often in great condition and the 10-20% loss in value most cars suffer during the first year is already being taken care of by the seller. That means you get an almost brand new car for 10-20% less. More over an A3 and A4 has much better resale value than the Jetta.

How many other compact saloons you know, that actually looks this classy?

But then again, I also will tell you that if put reliability above anything else, than I suggest to go with the...ah yes the Subaru Impreza.

Subaru also sells the Impreza in front-wheel-drive configuration with a normally aspirated 4-cylinder engine and now (I think) they have a Turbodiesel engine available for the Impreza.

I never drove the Mk.V Jetta, but I did test drive a GTI... and I have to say that the 2.0TFSI is the perfect engine for a car that size (it smokes my 325i). Plus the handling and the 6sp gearbox were excellent. My only complaint was the clutch… too soft like in the Mk.IVs. I suppose it’s similar with the Jetta.

But the best thing to do is to go and test drive it, along with other competitors you might be considering.

VW Ausralia is selling them by the bucket loads, the TDI winning Best Mid Sized Car has helped heaps.

BTW if you want a diesel Jetta, VW will release a new quieter Diesel engine for 2008MY

Have you tried a Honda Accord Euro 2.4L, or a Subaru Liberty/Legecy 3.0L. IMO they offer better performance, better handling, resale value, cheaper maintenance/servicing cost, and ofcourse those cars have better reliability than the VW Jetta. The interior stylings might not suit your preference, and the general feel of a japanese car is very different to a Euro designed car.

I am not sure where do VW get the Jetta from your country, but the ones in Australia are from Brazil, according to one of the dealers i spoke to, so the quality of the car won't be as good as other VW from germany.

I think that I am well qualified to answer this question as I bought a Jetta V 2.0 TFSI last year in May. So far I have covered 25,000 km (15,000 miles).

The car is great, mine came standard with the 17 inch mags plus heated seats, climatronic and leather interior. The only extra's that I took was the sunroof and metallic paint.

All in all the car is exactly what I wanted. it has all the performance that you coudl want (I have had my ECU reflashed by REVO technik, which ups power to around 170KW plus torque to 320 NM @ 2300 rpm). Plus the car has loads of space for my wife and son (this was the main reason I chose it over a GTi).

I have had a few electronic niggles (par for the course for a VAG product), but thankfully the car has been mechanically perfect. One or two rattles in the dash have proved quite irritating (especially because the car is so quiet), but overall I really like Jet and we have a good relationship.

Consumption has risen since I have the car chipped (from an average per tank of 10 l/100km to about 11.3), but the new power has certainly influenced by driving style.

Let me know if you want any more information. I would recommend the Jetta every time, especially because here in South Africa the same money will only get you a BMW 320i and that is dog slow up here in JHB (where our high altitude causes a loss of around 17% to normally aspirated engine power - turbocharged cars only lose about 5%).

I definitely want to trade her in at the end of next year/beginning of 2009 for a 335i Sedan though. At that time, she will be sorely missed.

Thanks all for your replies. And nalyd, I am sure I will have questions when my Jetta gets delivered next week.

I guess flashing the ECU does improve the performance. I'm not sure about touching the ECU but maybe I'll try tuning it up after driving it somewhat.

BTW, I asked the dealer where my car was produced and he told me Mexico. I guess Mexico and Brazil made cars could be pretty equal in quality. :P He told me that most Jettas are made in Mexico now. (I don't know if that's true or not)
