What makes the design look skewed is the logic behind the car. One can see that this car was not design from a clean slate of paper but instead the starting point was the Phantom, which they shrunk, soften edges and played around with the front-end for the sake of "reinventing" RR or creating some differentiation from the Phantom.

The outcome has not been worthy of a bow as the Ghost looks too much like a downgraded Phantom or a Phantom knock off. Porsche made the same stupid mistake when designing the Cayenne by which the 911 was the starting point for the design of the SUV, and we all know how badly that turned out. Every car needs to stand on its own merits and the Ghost doesn't. As much as some of us might despise the Bentley CGT, VW did a beyond satisfactory job of reinventing Bentley. The Flyingspur and CGT have been a major, and this without borrowing the Arnage design. Only the quad head lights were borrowed and the rest of the is 100% different, so is the image and so is the customers. Young and successful people have truly embraced the CGT.

I do have to say that it's a very risky and difficult task to reinvent a brand, especially one which is strong on tradition and very resistant to change. But it can still be done. Jaguar has certainly done it with the XF which is miles away from it's older father, the XJ.

BMW could have been a bit more decisive in their aims with this car because it almost suffers from an identity crisis. It's trying not to look like the Phantom but is at the same time trying to do so.

Eitherway I will get to see and investigate the car up close at an event here in London around the middle of July.

The nose is maybe a bit small. Might be because it's black, but the grille looks weird.

Rolls-Royce increases workforce by 50% in preparation for new Ghost

Despite a global downturn in auto sales in general, Rolls-Royce is working at full steam just to meet demand but with a second, higher volume model on its way the carmaker will be forced to increased production and take on more staff. Rolls-Royce has already added more shifts and lengthened working hours, but still production can barely keep up.

In preparation for its upcoming Ghost sedan, Rolls-Royce is planning to increase its manufacturing workforce by 50%. More than 150 new jobs will be created to support the Ghost, which is scheduled to start production at the end of this year for an early 2010 sales release. By the end of 2009 Rolls-Royce will have created almost 400 new jobs in under two years, bringing the total number of employees based at Goodwood in the UK to 900.

The Ghost will be built on its own dedicated assembly line but will share paint, wood and leather workshops with the Phantom series of cars. Therefore, the majority of the new positions have been created in the wood, leather and paint shops as well as the assembly areas.

Even more amazingly, given the state of the rest of the industry, sales are expected to continue growing. For the year to date, Rolls-Royce sales were up 20% and with the new model due over the course of the next financial year the luxury carmaker from Goodwood is set to have its best year on record.
