You're right, could also be a material failure. I didn't knew some suppliers deliver entire, pre-assembled axles.

I too hope Opel can get its acts together. The newer models are promising, and I have to say I loved the last Astra (design, finish were outstanding imo, and the outfashioned rear axle didn't bother me that much). Only that the quality problems were fatal letdowns...
