VW South Africa - Das Ende der Unikate

You now need to be very brave!

At least when your heart to an old tin depends on time history and irretrievable cultural rolling. The message is not new, but it is in the net a bit lost. In November 2006-over a car transporter on the way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth in South Africa. That is tragic, but happens every day. The message gets goose bumps until one factor, if you are looking at what had loaded the van: Nine out of the houses unique Audi and Volkswagen, in new condition or better. The truck was commissioned by Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) on the road. A black day for the scene!

The veteran treasures were on an exhibition on the occasion of the 55s existence of VWSA. In the context of a celebratory lunch with invited guests in the Groote Schuur Manor House, a historic building, which today is also the head of state of the Republic of South Africa is home, they were issued before the portal and were of the public order of finish.

Volkswagen looks to South Africa on a long manufacturing tradition. The plant in Uitenhage currently employs 5600 staff. The number of exported models is 40,000, the total even higher, at 100,000 vehicles a year. Upward trend. Thus, here since 1978, the Gulf 1 produces, under the name City Golfin only slightly modified form is still new to buy. Also produced here is the Golf 5 and different chassis for commercial vehicles.

The list of cars, on that Tuesday for the return trip loaded, reads like a wish letter to Santa Claus: The latest in Uitenhage built by VW T3 Bus 2002, 1958, a 1959 and a 1978 Beetle, an Audi 90 from 1970 , an Audi 100 of 1973, a 1975er Audi coupe and a Passat from 1979! We want them to touch, to listen to pure, and the tactile experience of these barren epoch automotive experience. The lovely little details to discover. and the smell of old materials inhale.

This will help you with the car shown here, however, no longer succeed. Near Albertinia turns over the car transporter repeatedly. The loaded vehicles are completely destroyed after the evaluation by experts, it quickly became clear that a restoration was not possible here. Bill Stephens, the communications manager of VWSA, appeared shaken. New vehicles would be replaced. This unique accident here, but highlight one irretrievable milestone in the Group's history.

It could be of course many issues to discuss. Among friends, it is vintage actually customary journeys valuable cars, either on its own axis or on multiple transporters carry. This also occurred in exactly this case the risk of loss of several vehicles can be minimized. On accident, I could on the net, unfortunately, no information can be found, including the driver of the van and its silent state is off. Does it then, the bitter pill to swallow and to say farewell.

The museum has been trying to comparable vehicles in the world came to be restored and the empty seats as possible to replace. Also will be stored out of the large inventory models unearthed here. Actually ... yes eiiiiigentlich there are only cars. Dents can get over, is somehow replaced sheet. But one or the other of you will feel able to help me in viewing the photographs object. Something somehow peaceful, beautiful is forever destroyed. In the desperate, innocent gaze of wrecks you can see that they did not deserve it ...

Those Audis are gorgeous. How on earth have they been mistreated like that?

This sucks.

There is still some hope though that they can be restored. Send them back to Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg - I am sure there are 100% genuine spare parts out there that can be used in reconstructing and restoring these babies to their former glory!

I was about to buy one and restore it about a year ago, but sadly my plans changed. An uncle of mine has one of those rotting in his back yard. I haven't found anyone willing to buy and restore it, since it's a classic model and could be worth many euros if given some attention...
