A 10 year S-Class would have been the W140 model, a tank on wheels if there ever was one. Who knows what it would have done, but I'd bet on that particular S before I would an Audi. BMW, well they still haven't fully maxed out on safety yet, so the previous 7 I wouldn't bet on against the Audi. M

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Freaky Accident With Audi A8 Cut In Half Yes, the material did have much to do with the results; the coefficient of elasticity of Aluminum is much smaller than that of Steel ( I had to look it up but I remember being a 3 to 1 ratio , please see below link to hyperphysics) What this means is that the steel can absorb more of the energy from the crash by deforming rather than cutting ( you know, that elastic vs inelastic collision thing and deformation of structural molecular lattices) On the other hand, it was high speed against a tree; large healthy trees tend to act as extremely rigid objects.. definitely NOT good for cars! Just check out the modulus for wood! I am glad the person driving survived! Ok, now back to being blonde.. - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER |

![]() | Re: Freaky Accident With Audi A8 Cut In Half Now yannis will go mad and accuse us being stupid ok everyone would assume that Audi for sure have thought of this, but why they still insist on using Aluminium ? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Freaky Accident With Audi A8 Cut In Half Hey Maserati man, don't worry I'll tell yannis not to call us stupid ![]() Yannis: please don't call us STUPID ( or anything else of the sort) Well, you're not supposed to slam cars at high speed into trees ( or anything else in that case). But Aluminum does have a low density (lighter weight per same volume) than steel. So it does have its good side. Keep in mind that for that car, that accident , if steel would have been used, that car would probably be a ugly tangled mess ! Funny, you say Aluminium, I say Aluminum ![]() |

Anyone know if other cars than Audi also get cut in two in similar accidents? If no, will never buy an Audi, and will never seat on the rear seats of an Audi! If yes, will never drive like a maniac... Well, I don't care actually, if I drive I am not at the rear, so I can drive like a maniac.. ![]() |

... I dunno but that spelling was always stuck in my mind .. thanks for correcting that .. BTW I think Audi have thought of that and I think they deliberatly engineered the breaking points so that the driver can walk away unharmed ... Maybe this is the case .. BUT, in many photos of such cases, the rear passengers would've been badly hurt! ![]()
