EU considering banning FAST cars! (!!!) - 06-07-2007, 02:12 PM

Here's my question: WHAT THE F***?

These dumbass politicians really amaze me sometimes. God I wish someone would beat up these fools with a baseball bat that's decorated with broken glass and nails!

There are calls for the European Union to ban the making of cars that can go at more than 101mph (162km/h).

The proposal comes in a report to the European Parliament on EU plans for a law to curb CO2 emissions from cars.

MEPs will vote on the plan this autumn but the BBC has seen an early draft of the report, which will be released to parliament later this month.

Its author, British Lib Dem MEP Chris Davies, says 101mph is 25% more than the top speed limit in most EU states.

He says cars have gradually increased in power and weight, which increases their CO2 emissions, even though people cannot legally use that extra power.

His report also suggests that a fifth of car advertisements should be devoted to cars' fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The European Commission is preparing legislation that would limit CO2 emissions of the average new car sold in Europe to 130g per kilometre, by 2012.

But a spokesman said it would not support moves to limit the top speed of cars.

Mr Davies says it will be costly for industry to meet the commission's proposed target of 130g/km by 2012, and suggests instead a target of 120g/km by 2015, followed by a second target of 95g/km by 2020.

That sucks. Period. WT-F are they thinking? I hope this crap never passes. Fast cars aren't the problem, it's the people who do stupid stuff with them. A slow ass caddilac from 1970s pollutes way more than a M3 or RS4.

Idiots.

(!!!) EU considering banning FAST cars! (!!!)

I think your title is somewhat misleading. That's the proposal of one MEP, not the commission. The chance of such a proposal to be adopted is sub-zero.

Best regards, south

What the hell are these people sinking???!! Damn, who drives around with the heavy armoured S 600s, W12s and 760iLs?
And speed limits doesn't really lower the CO2 emission...

Europe considering ban of cars capable of more than 101 mph - 06-08-2007, 08:26 AM

Quote:
Autocar is reporting that the European Parliament will consider a proposal this fall to ban all cars capable of reaching speeds over 101 mph. The proposal can be traced back to a man named Chris Davies, a Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parlaiment for the North West of England. Davies argues (try not to laugh while reading his words) that "between 1994 and 2004 the power of new cars went up by 28 per cent, making them a lot heavier, and so increasing the amount of CO2 they put out, even though no country raised its speed limit to allow cars to use this increased power."

The logic is so flawed here, we don't know where to begin. According to Davies, giving a car more power makes it heavier, thus increasing the amount of CO2 it emits. First of all, cars are heavier these days primarily because most developed nations, Europe and the United States included, have federally mandated that cars be made safer, and to achieve this, manufacturers have had to design new safety systems that add weight to cars. Things like airbags, crumple zones, side-impact bars, and the like are the primary reason cars have gotten heavier. While enlarging the displacement of an engine, switching from four to six cylinders or adding a supercharger could make a car heavier while giving it more oomph, more power for its own sake is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition for a car gaining weight.

I laughed reading this... if this were to happen, it would mark the end of the EU as Germany would separate.

There was another proposal in the European parliament 5 years ago that all cars with more than 250-300 hp power should be AWD for safety reasons.
Of course that would affect several car makers like MB , BMW and Ferrari and sadly it was never voted.
