G Class update in styling. - 12-06-2005, 01:16 PM

I happened upon this story yesterday, and I completely forgot to make mention of it.

A while back, we told you that despite rumors that the upcoming GL-Class would replace the G-Class, Mercedes instead opted to keep producing the tried and tested G-Wagon in addition to any future GL models.

New rumors began circulating yesterday that in addition to keeping the G-Class, Mercedes may be updating the G-Class' exterior and interior styling as well.

Personally, I think the classic exterior features of the G-Wagon are what make it special. Update the interior, update the safety features, but don't touch the G-Wagon's classic styling.

Just my two cents.

As has been the theme for the day, we'll be sure to keep you posted if we hear anything new.

Sound great. Some head and tail lights updates and the car will be fine for the next 20 years .

They will not change the look..they did this once in the 80´s and once in the 90´s..
So its time again to get it on par with the rest of the lineup..
I hope there will be a G63 AMG also

I hope this is true. Mercedes really listens to its customers nowadays because only a select few will continue to buy this thing, but MB is willing to please. I like to see that type of attitude from them, again if this is true.

Considering the hardpoints that can't be changed without very expensive modifications I wonder what they'll do to the old G.

Now the problem arises on how to market the "GL". Too late to cancel it, but it isn't too late to re-name it since "GL" hasn't been officially given yet.

GLK, GLX anyone? G and GL seem like too much confusion.

M

Why are they even producing the GL anyway? The G-Class looks very Mercedes and I think they should keep it that way. It resembles no other cars on the road. I miss the days where Mercedes-Benz were unique and looked unique. The W126, W116, W100 all looked so distinct and screamed out it was a Mercedes-Benz. Some of these cars on the road today, I have to look twice to see what make it is. They look too similar, designers are too unimaginative today and all draw the same designs in my opinion. That's why I'm looking forward to the Citroen C6, it's completely unique.

I especially they continue producing the G500 Guard, perhaps my favourite vehicle in the Benz lineup.

I couldn't agree with you more bum-man, the G class was no such an original design when it was first launched - the only reason it is distinctive now is because SUV design has changed since 1979.

Mercedes managment should be @#$%^ slapped for ever thinking about getting rid of this vehicle:

You can hardly design anything this unique anymore.

I'm terribly sorry Merc1, I simply can not agree with you on this. I love the G class too...but it is now a relic. Not only that, but it is been named as one of the Mercedes vehicles most likely to suffer from technical problems - it is also just about the most gas-guzzling vehicle you can buy (that's just not cool in 2006) - this is not at all good - it is tarnishing it's illustrious history. I say let this wonderful old truck be put to rest - it deserves to be remembered and cherished as the best 4WD of it's time rather than the world's most expensive shopping cart for the Rodeo Drive set.
