Sorry guys, I just do not share you excitement about this. I think it is time for the G class to go - if it went now it might at least keep some mystique, but sadly it's now doomed to die a slow and painful death as an out-dated suburban status-symbol for wealthy Americans whose self-esteem just could not allow them to drive a lowly American-built M class.

I understand that Mercedes sees this G class as still a very salable vehicle in the USA, but the thing has been rated as one of the worst polluting vehicles you can buy.

As far as I'm concerned, once again Mercedes-Benz has failed to do the right thing here - it seems, they were unable to produce a halfway decent replacement for a twenty six year old model - you might be celebrating, but I view this as more evidence of the complete shambles at Daimler.

(thank you Stuttgarter, I fixed the error )

Well maybe Mercedes should never have gotten rid of the W126, which was launched the same year as the G class.

Mercedes needs to replace the G class because it no longer fulfills it's originally intended purpose - it's raison d'être is now as a status-symbol for the supermarket carparks of up-market suburbs - and that is a very sad and superficial end for what was once the world's best off-road vehicle.

This is the reason why the G wagon is still going to be produced. Even with over 20 years on it's neck the car does look extremly good.

Sorry Artist, I must reiterate - if this is the best off-road vehicle Mercedes-Benz can offer in 2005, then they really have fallen from grace.
