Those Islands in Dubai are silly... If you learn the tech of it all, you realize that they obstruct natural oceanic flows, thus eroding the natural coast along the city... Also they are not going to last long without constant attention... Sand moves when acted upon by water... Well enough with the 'my 2 cents'.

I don't agree with that C.Charles. The leaders of the UAE have been very forward-looking and clever; they realize the oil will not last forever, so they have set about making Dubai a world economic centre to rival New York, London, and Tokyo. They are also focusing greatly on tourism. I don't underestimate their abilities at all, they are imaginative, educated, and intelligent people -- Dubai will undoubtedly be one of the leading cities of the world in the 21st century.

I tend to agree... although.... Again referring to my previous 'scientific' comments on the man made islands, they are affecting ocean currents, they wont last longer then 10 year and at this rate neither will the beach in front of the city, because of the palm island... Thus tourism may suffer badly... We shell see what happens. I hope they succeed, I just don't approve of the current methods...

Well i dont agree with you on this. First of all, if these island have been made to last for 10 years, then you are not going to see them.
They invested on the latest technologies and hired many specialist and scientists just to study the project before they even annouce it.

I dont think our tourism is only based on these islands, there are far many other projects thats play major role in shaping Dubais tourism..

The Hydropolis
World's First Underwater Hotel
http://www.hotelchatter.com/story/20...tle/Hydropolis

Dubai Land
http://www.dubailand.ae/

Burj Dubai
World's Tallest Building.
http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6781

Dubai Mall
The Largest Mall in the World.
http://www.thedubaimall.com/

http://www.nakheel.ae/

http://www.falconcity.com/

And many other projects... i just advise to have a look at these sites to have an idea about whats going.

Thanks

Re: Schumacher given an island by Dubai prince

I hate to be negative, but I have a feeling that most of those projects will not attract the average tourist - they seem to be aimed at very wealthy people, and I don't think there are enough of those for all those massive investments to pay off. Impressive as the islands and buildings are as engineering feats and such, I can't help thinking that something more down-to-earth and perhaps more in touch with the traditions and cultural heritage of the area would have been more attractive, for me at least.

There is some truth in what you are saying donau ..but I don't think Dubai is aiming to be a family holiday destination ...they don't want to be another Florida or Las Vegas, they are aiming for the most affluent travelers ....and there are many of them now. Just this year, for example, every single person on Forbes richest 400 people in the US, was worth at least $1 billion USD -- there is a large market among highly paid executives and self-made millionaires too. The world has never had so many very wealthy people living at one time.
