Mosley apologises and vows to stay

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, April 1st 2008, 17:16 GMT

Max MosleyMax Mosley has apologised to members of the FIA for any embarrassment caused by the recent revelations about his private life, but made it clear he remains fully committed to his role as president of motor racing's governing body.

In a letter sent on Tuesday to all presidents of the national FIA clubs, all members of the FIA Senate, the World Motor Sport Council and the World Council for Mobility and the Automobile, Mosley blames the allegations about his sexual conduct on a 'covert' operation to discredit him.

The FIA head also denied claims from the newspaper that there were Nazi connotations in his actions.

He also reveals that he intends to take legal action against the News of the World newspaper for the article.

In the letter, Mosley writes: "From information provided to me by an impeccable high-level source close to the UK police and security services, I understand that over the last two weeks or so, a covert investigation of my private life and background has been undertaken by a group specialising in such things, for reasons and clients as yet unknown. I have had similar but less well-sourced information from France.

"Regrettably you are now familiar with the results of this covert investigation and I am very sorry if this has embarrassed you or the club. Not content with publicising highly personal and private activities, which are, to say the least, embarrassing, a British tabloid newspaper published the story with the claim that there was some sort of Nazi connotation to the matter. This is entirely false.

"It is against the law in most countries to publish details of a person's private life without good reason. The publications by The News of the World are a wholly unwarranted invasion of my privacy and I intend to issue legal proceedings against the Newspaper in the UK and other jurisdictions."

Although there have been calls by some for Mosley to resign in the wake of the scandal, in the letter he claims that he has received support from a number of parties who wish him to stand firm in light of the controversy.

"I have received a very large number of messages of sympathy and support from those within the FIA and the motor sport and motoring communities generally, suggesting that my private life is not relevant to my work and that I should continue in my role," wrote Mosley. "I am grateful and with your support I intend to follow this advice.

"I shall now devote some time to those responsible for putting this into the public domain but above all I need to repair the damage to my immediate family who are the innocent and unsuspecting victims of this deliberate and calculated personal attack.

"You can, however be certain that I will not allow any of this to impede my commitment to the work of the FIA."

The letter is the first public statement from Mosley since the story broke in Sunday's News of the World newspaper.

Although Mosley is scheduled to attend this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, it is looking increasingly likely that he will choose to skip the event.

Although the news of Mosley's antics has generated a lot of coverage and reaction in the media, so far Formula One teams and manufacturers have remained silent over the matter.

Mosley may miss Bahrain amid sex scandal

Max Mosley has faced renewed calls for his resignation after weekend newspaper allegations that the head of Formula One's governing body took part in a Nazi-style orgy with prostitutes.
The Times newspaper said in a leader column that Mosley must stand down while Ferrari's 1979 world champion Jody Scheckter called for a concerted media campaign to force the Briton's hand.
Mosley's spokesman is telling enquiring members of the media that, while Mosley may not attend the Bahrain Grand Prix as planned this week, he does not intend to simply succumb to the burden of the scandal.
"There is absolutely no question in my mind that Mosley should resign," South African Scheckter told The Guardian.
"From a purely motor racing point of view, you can't have somebody like this running the sport or any other sport come to that."
The Times said Mosley was as entitled as anyone to his fantasies but the question of whether he could continue at the helm of the International Automobile Federation had become a moral question and not a legal one.
"He should resign," the paper concluded.
Formula One's commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone told The Times that it would be better for Mosley not to attend Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix.
"He shouldn't go, should he?," he said.
"The problem is he would take all the ink away from the race and put it on something which, honestly and truly, is nobody else's business anyway," he added.
The News of the World tabloid, from the same News International stable as The Times, published a front page story on Sunday with photographs of a man they identified as Mosley.
Mosley was unavailable for comment and the FIA said on Sunday that his lawyers were in contact with the newspaper. A video that had been posted on the News of the World website is no longer accessible.
An FIA spokesman could not confirm Mosley's immediate plans.
"We understand that Mr Mosley was originally scheduled to visit the grand prix, but we are not aware of his current plans," an FIA spokesman said.
Ecclestone, who controls the commercial side of Formula One while Mosley oversees the governing FIA, said Bahrain's rulers would not welcome Mosley's presence.
"They wouldn't like it," he said.
However the 77-year-old Briton, who has worked closely with Mosley for decades, said he would not be calling for his compatriot to quit.
"What Max should do is what he thinks is right because it is only him that's involved, not the FIA," said Ecclestone. "He must do what he believes, in his heart of hearts, is the right thing."
Ecclestone said the Nazi connotations made the incident more serious. Mosley's late father Oswald was founder of the pre-war British Union of Fascists.

It's only 2 races into the season and already we have a spicy story. I gave this guy the benefit of the doubt due to the source, but this is really shocking to me.

Okay, whoever gets caught spying in Formula 1 from now on will have to endure a kinky spanking session by Max and 5 hookers for 5 hours.

As a conciliatory gesture, a cup of tea will be served at the end of the ordeal.

But he didn't admit or deny if that was him in the video.

Re: FIA chief Max Mosley embroiled in S&M sex scandal

Having watched the video the guy in the video could impossibly be Mosley. The way he walked into the building down to the basement in broad daylight isn't very discrete for a man of his caliber. Especially if you consider that he lives in Monaco where he can easily get his hands on low profile escort girl by flicking a finger.

Very true, but those video still shots does show a clear photo of a man who looks very much like Max, however I am still not convienced Max was involved in any of this.
