Except the words of Peter Sauber and Dr. Mario Theissen who both praised for his input.

what I do know is that Kubica has the skill and knowledge to develop a car.

According to whom ?!
How does someone with just one 1 season + a couple more races become a total package in such a short time ?!
You mean tell me F1 is just a small step up from F-BMW/F3/GP2 ?!
J. Stewart, in his days of sanity pre Hamilton, said you'd need about 3 years.
And I'd put Rosberg ahead of Kubica.

Re: The best driver to build a winning team around

I'm surprised Kubica is so highly-rated. The commentators on the American broadcast of the Brazilian GP did praise him for all the work he does with the team, saying that he does everything the team asks of him in testing.

However, I think all the evidence points to Heidfeld being the developer. I wanted to included Nick in the poll, but he'll be 31 in 2008. I can't see him going on for more than three or four seasons, especially if he continues adding to his tally of most grand prix races without a win. Heidfeld has scored the most points in F1 history without a GP win. I don't think BMW will win in '08 either.

Re: The best driver to build a winning team around

Nico Rosberg is the one you've missed.

He doesn't have the 3 years Stewart mentioned yet, but he's the closest from the rookies and is a working guy (must have inherited from his german mother) interested in technical stuff and who was partnered with Wurz for 2 seasons (so he had were to learn from).

And I do belive Heidfeld can win a race in 2008 at least.

Re: The best driver to build a winning team around

I'll go with Kimi. Alonso would clearly win with the knowledge of set-ups and technicality but the fact that he isn't smooth at driving is what bugs me. Kimi is very much similar to MS when it comes to driving smoothness where Alonso is still jerky. Also, as we've witnessed with Ferrari and McLaren, Kimi is damn fast when he has a working car that is properly set up. I would say that if Alonso and Kimi were in the same team, same car, each's preffered set up, Kimi would win. Just IMO. The others are good too, but they lack experience. As Hami already showed, pressure can break the best of the best drivers and both Kimi and Alonso have had tremendous pressure on their backs and survived; a force known as Schumacher.

None of the others have had to take on Schumi 1 on 1 except for Kimi and Alonso and that is a big plus in my book.

Re: The best driver to build a winning team around

Alonso is too hot-heated and emotional... too much bitch-and-moan and other fluff.

Kimi doesn't have many years left in him.

Jenson missed his prime.

Massa is a good sencond driver, always was and always will be.

Hammy has the most potential (talent-wise) but seems to crack under pressure.

Robert is not the most talented but is very resilient and mentally strong.

... vote goes to Robert.

I think Alonso is or can be a smooth driver. I remember he was quite smooth in a slow car when he first started, unlike Massa who used to hacksaw on that steering wheel. Alonso has a unique driving style. These last three years he's driving with a style that takes an odd, jerky entry into some corners. It might come across as not smooth, but I think it's effective. He's won two of the last three WDCs and almost joined Fangio as the only man to win three with two different teams.

Depending on who you believe, some F1 observers think Alonso adapted his driving style to deal with the graining issues the tyres have had these last few years. Alonso hasn't had too many huge tyre problems issues, unless you include the China race when he said his tyres were overflated or when he kept flinging it off the road in Montreal!

When Hamilton first started in F1, people talked about how smooth and easy he is in the car. Yet he was the one that had tyre problems a few times. I still don't understand why his tyres in China went away the way they did.

But if you're building a team around a driver, you're going to give him unequivocal No. 1 status. I think it's a no brainer. You don't need to have two competitive drivers taking points off each other. It only works if your car is so dominant that the team is guaranteed to win, like 1988 with Senna and Prost. When you have two superstars fighting with each other but not a totally dominant car, you open the door to another driver, like this year and Prost in '86.

Re: The best driver to build a winning team around

Despite the turmoil this season, I'd go with Alonso. I'm convinced that a large part of McLaren's success this season was due to his development work.

I'm looking forward to next year. I'd like to see him leave McLaren, have them fall back and his new team reap the benefits of his development work.

He's kind of needy and emotional but some of the greatest leaders/innovators are too. The flaws we see in their personalities is what has taken them to the top.

Re: The best driver to build a winning team around

i think Alonso blames his team and everyone else when his own teammate beats him. he just can't stand being beaten by his teammate. we all saw in Renault with GF, when Fisi beat him at Indy, he didn't like it one bit.

i just think it's his style to whine and blame everyone when he loses.
