New F1 regulation to facilitate overtaking

New 2009 regulation, to make overtaking easier!

The "overtake-commission", with Ferrari-Rory Byrne, Renault-Pas Tymonds and McLaren Paddy Lowe, working in the wind-canal and drive simulator of McLaren, made several propositions to make overtaking easier.

Pedro de la Rosa and Gary Pfaffett tested the aero and were impressed by the easier overtaking.

This aero will change the look of the F1s.

And they are back to the slicks!!!

Good.
But active suspensions and movable wings would help things even further.
I now movable wing will be back by 2011 proposals but I hope active suspensions too.
More mechanical grip, ground effects downforce and less drag/turbulence on straights is always good for overtaking.

Re: New F1 regulation to facilitate overtaking

i said it a couple of years back and i will repeatformula one can be either of 2 things
either a nascar type race for the cars to focus on the drivers, or let all hell brake lose and impose only the most essential of limitations. when you freeze development in any area you give an unfair advantage to the bigger budgets, and more importantly you freeze the creativity wheel of all teams

Re: New F1 regulation to facilitate overtaking

So it took that dumb ass Max 10 years to figure out that grooved tires are bad for racing.

^ And it took him 15 years too realize than an unclean and sensitive aero is bad for overtaking.

I said it before, without a clean(er) and (less) sensitive aero and (more) mechanical grip there won't be any proper overtaking.

Still active/self-leveling suspensions and movable aero/wings would help even further. They'd reduce drag on the straights (= turbulence), increase downforce on corners and improve mechanical grip.

Quote:
The technical directors agreed to proposals which are as follows:

- Front wing width increased to 180 instead of 140 cm.

- Front wing height decreased to 7.5 instead of 15 cm.

[ this essentially reverses an almost 15 years old trend of killing overtaking by making the front wing too small and 2 high ]

- The middle section over a width of 40 cm has to be a standard part.

- The driver may adjust the front wing flaps from the cockpit twice a lap by an angle of a maximum 6 degrees.

- Rear wing width 75 instead of 100 cm

- Rear wing height 95 instead of 80 cm.

[ moving the rear wing lower was another stupid decision made ~12 years ago witch made it more sensitive to turbulence ]

- the diffusor then starts from the centre of the rear axle rather than from the front end of the rear wheels.

- it may raise to 17.5 instead of 12.5 cm.

[ yet another stupid decision reversed ]

- the bodywork has to be clean. That means no barge boards, no winglets, no chimneys, no flipups.

[ well duh ]

Windtunnel research has shown that with the new rules the overall downforce loss will be 50 percent compared to the 2006 aero. If you follow another car within half a car length you will only lose 25 instead of 46 percent of the downforce and the balance shift will be 1 percent to the front rather than 4 percent to the back as it is now...

[ no need for a 50% loss of downforce really, as downforce isn't the problem but how you produce it is ]

Formula One Season grand prix - official calendar - race driver - F1 circuit team shop tickets interview

To sum it all up, most of the dumb decisions done in the past 15 years will be reversed.
However it doesn't mention the return of slick and/or active suspensions witch would have improved things even further, or the fully movable wings proposed for 2011.

And only when these return will we have a truly proper formula, as the cars will get more mechanical grip and will reduce drag/turbulence on the straights and increase downforce (with drag) only on the corners when they need it.
