Re: F. Alonso: McLaren MB not ready to win yet.

No problem.

He, like Massa of Ferrari, and even some Renault boys, also sees BMW as a raising force, perhaps capable of winning races.

Also it was shown what the McMerc needed to improve upon:
- more grip on front
- more power from the engine

The MB engine of 2006 wasn't up there with the top 3 : Renault/Ferrari and BMW.
So this might be the case till the switch to the turbos.

If I'm not mistaken Merc's engine was one of the only manufacturer to have their engines regularly hit 20k, Cosworth was the only other but they always broke. Now with the rule change (19k) limit they are forced to redesign for better torque application rather than peak power (what they they had last season).

To my knowledge the engine was the weak part of MB.
The revers of the 06 season to, my knowledge, were the Ferrari and BMW.

Cosworth and MercedesHighPerformanceEngines Ltd. were the only engines as far as I know that cracked 20k in quali trim. It was the poor aero and cooling that hurt the McMerc the past season.

The aim was to start with a solid foundation and then gradually raise the revs. Specific figures for peak power and revs were not revealed, but the P86 was certainly very capable of high rpm. By the end of the year was generally considered the third most powerful engine, just behind Renault and Ferrari. The 20,000 rpm barrier was certainly broken, the optimum probably closer to 21,000
