Ford Is Readying A Trio Of Twin-Turbo Engines

Looks like BMW isn't the only new twin-turbo sherif in town. Back during the Detroit Show we hipped you to the knowledge that FoMoCo was readying a "twin-force" V6 good for over 400 hp that would be showing up in a Lincoln flagship. Not good enough for Mulally, apparently. Turns out that Dearborn is actually preparing twin-turbo 4 and 8-cylinder engines as well. Which is fantastic news. For their part, Ford is saying that this new family of forced induction mills will be easy on our pocketbooks, explaining that "twin-force will offer diesel-like fuel economy." And that's good, we like that. But they are leaving out the part about how twin-turbo V8 Mustangs (and maybe the Interceptor..) will be better than 10 Super Bowls. Direct injection and cylinder deactivation will also be part of the mix, natch.

Ford TwinForce to debut in 2009 Lincoln MKS

The first car to feature Ford’s new Motor Authority » Ford TwinForce to debut in 2009 Lincoln MKSengine technology will be the 2009 Lincoln MKS, itself based on the MKR concept shown earlier this year. TwinForce is the name of Ford’s new range of fuel-efficient engines, labeled so because of the twin effects of improved power and fuel economy.
The engine that will debut in the upcoming MKS will be a flex-fuel 3.5L V6 delivering 415hp and 400lb-ft of torque thanks to a pair of turbochargers and direct injection technology. According to Edmunds, Ford is also developing a 2.5L four-cylinder variant that will eventually power the Fusion sedan and Edge crossover by the end of the decade, as well as a new dual-clutch six-speed PowerShift gearbox that should also appear in the new MKS.
Performance buffs will be pleased to know that the Mustang is destined to receive a 5.0L TwinForce V8, while an even larger 6.2L engine will be relegated to the Blue Oval’s full-size pickups and utility vehicles. Both V8 engines will not only benefit from TwinForce technology, but they’ll also feature a cylinder deactivation mechanism.

Re: Ford Is Readying A Trio Of Twin-Turbo Engines

This is indeed great news. Ford is in such dire shape right now so any news on something new is good news for real. I think 415hp should make up for this new Linc not having a V8. If only the production MKS looked as good as that concept above. Can't wait to see what the hp numbers will be for the Mustang! The 2009 Mustang, Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro war is going to be a interesting one we'll read about continuously!

Re: Ford Is Readying A Trio Of Twin-Turbo Engines

That's a nice engine bay in 1st post...

Oh and those cars will finally become lighter with those engines 'cause they'll spare them of V8 weight... And weight if i'm not mistaken was onke of their weakest points...

Re: Ford Is Readying A Trio Of Twin-Turbo Engines

These are pretty impressive numbers from a 3.5L V6, I wonder what power they will be able to get from a 5.0L V8!
