Rare collection of Ferraris to be auctioned at Maranello factory

One of the biggest collections of past and present Ferraris is set to be sold off next month at a special event at the Maranello factory dubbed the ‘Ferrari: Leggenda e Passione’ auction. Ferrari fans will have the opportunity to buy some of the marque’s rarest and oldest cars – both road-going and racing models – covering nearly 50 years of production.

Some of the highlights of the sale include a pair of rare California Spyders (a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder - pictured - and a stunning 1961 Ferrari 250GT SWB California Spyder), a 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe Pinin Farina (a special one-off fitted with a prototype 3.0L 250 type V12 engine), and a 1951 Ferrari 340 America Ghia Coupé with a long racing history.
The 340 America is regarded as one of the rarest of all early racing Ferraris and this example was the last of four 340 Americas bodied by Carrozzeria Ghia.
More modern vehicles include a race-ready 1995 Ferrari 412T2, a 1999 Ferrari 333SP, a pair of F1 race cars raced by Michael Schumacher (a 1997 Ferrari F31OB and a 2000 Ferrari F2000), as well as two Enzos and a special India Tour model 2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.
To coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Ferrari Daytona, the May event will also offer a 1971 Ferrari GTS/4 Daytona Spyder, a fully restored 1971 Daytona Coupe, and an original 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona with just 2,500 miles on the clock.

RM AUCTIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOTHEBY'S SETS NEW WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR RARE FERRARI AT MARANELLO, ITALY SALE

By: RM Auctions

Maranello, Italy (May 18th, 2008) Car enthusiasts and Ferrari collectors from across the globe descended on Maranello, Italy this past weekend for RM Auctions' second annual 'Ferrari Leggenda e Passione' auction event to witness a new auction record established for a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder formerlly owned by actor James Coburn. The rare car exceeeded all expectations by selling for a world record auction price for a vintage car at auction in the amount of $10,894,900 U.S., surpassing the previous record set at Sotheby's Monaco in 1990 for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at $10,756,000 U.S.

The annual RM Ferrari auction held in association with Sotheby's, put under the hammer an unrivalled collection of historic Ferraris at the legendary home of Ferrari in Maranello, Italy. Among the attendees was one extremely well known Ferrari enthusiast, and British television and radio personality Chris Evans. Chris, accompanied by his wife, golf pro and writer Natasha Shishmanian, attended the Gala reception on Saturday, May 17th where he fell for the considerable charms of a black 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder. The following day, Chris made the successful bid for his dream machine, which will now take pride of place in his own celebrated collection and the honor of 'the most valuable car sold in auction history.'

Re: Rare collection of Ferraris to be auctioned at Maranello factory

These California models have long been a favourite car of mine. I can remember when they could be bought for around 1/2million dollars -- what I great investment.

Anyway, I know there were both SWB and LWB versions ...but I have no idea how many were actually built. We are seeing quite a few of them coming up for auction lately .....I guess these recent sales results are proving too attractive.

I can't imagine these prices can last forever -- In some ways I view it as a sign of a looming economic crisis, it is not unprecedented for this kind of reckless over-valuation (also seen in the real estate and art markets) to be followed by a severe downturn.
