should I get charged by dealer for this? - 07-31-2008, 10:46 PM

Just had my car in for an oil change and filter which was to be $110. I asked to have the service reminder light (for service C) to be re-set. The car is an '07 E350 being leased for 27 mos. and due to be returned in 3 mos.

When I went to pay my bill, the dealer charged $35 to re-set the service light. I protested but they said I authorized it when I signed permission to do the service when I dropped off the car. Note: THEY NEVER TOLD ME THERE WOULD BE A CHARGE FOR THIS and frankly I've never heard of this being done before. They also charged $6 for window washer fluid.

Remember, I was ONLY in for an oil change and filter, not the "service". It's not the money as much as them doing this.

Has anyone ever heard of this or have it happen to them?

Was this at a dealer, a jiffylube/o'reilly AP/Advanced AP, or a local mechanic or lube shop?

I think he means the mercedes car dealership where he got his car. Sometimes, dealers do trick people for more money, happend to me, and i just kind of let it go and paid for it.

For the longest time the dealer I worked at had the washer fluid in with the oil change, then removed it because they were cheap f**ks.

Washer fluid could be an extra charge in the oil change. Does the washer fluid plus oil change add up to the price quoted?

I have never reset a service light and gotten paid for doing it. It takes only a few seconds to do, so if anything 1/10 of an hour $10-12. Anything more and they are greedy.

Something similar happened when we took our '05 E350 for service C. Because we did an oil change 2500km/6 months before, I specifically told them not to change the engine oil and filter when they perform service C. I also told them not to change the air con filter as well since we hardly use it. Before I leave I told them to call me if they want to change anything in the service. They said ok, and they will call when our car is ready. Needless to say, they did neither of them, so I called them up the next day and they said the car was ready since yesterday afternoon. Since they didn't call me about parts replacement, I assumed the they didn't replace the parts which i have requested them not to. But when I saw the bill, they changed the parts anyway without calling me, so I spoke to the service manager and he said he is just doing the things listed in service C. When I question him why they didn't ring me before hand, they didn't give me a direct answer. They also charged me $6 AUD for that retarded washer fluid.

In my case I only ask them to perform the service C but without the oil and filter changes.

Charging you $35 for re-setting the service light is an absolute joke, you could have done it yourself, it takes less than 60 sec. Tell them to get f*cked, I am sick and tired of dealers getting away with ripping off the customers.

With all due respect, your dealer is an @-hole.

Buying such expensive car from him and then he charges you for 35 $ for resetting the service reminder light is utter c**p!

My dealer never charged me for oil check, filters change, change and tires balancing, etc... All free, even whe i've owned my previous car, E60 530d.

Yes, I agree with all of you. I should NOT have been charged for this.

And yes, it was the Mercedes dealer. (Jiffy Lube, I'm sure wouldn't have charged for this.)

But Jiffy screw would have messed it up and cost you more later.
