^Do you think this is what Mercedes intends?

...you make me think.
Mercedes stated in 2005 that it has a "new design idiom" that emphasizes "clarity of expression" ....this refers to the wide expanses of clean surfaces and the obvious expression of speed through the dynamic character lines. They also mentioned that the designers are guided by "principles of purism", the absence of superfluous styling ....and a focus on "form follows function" . They are claiming to remain true to the tenets of German Industrial Modernism as has been the tradition at Mercedes-Benz.
Sacco was far more programmatic with his approach to Modern/Rationalist design. Under Pfeiffer/Wagener, Mercedes has extended the concept of Rational design to encompass more dynamic and expressive elements. There is nothing wrong with this ...but I do feel that the direct "quotation" of historical elements for purely cosmetic reasons is ever-so-slightly disingenuous ...but [to be fair] even Sacco (and his team) occasionally "quoted" historical Mercedes details ...they just were not so obvious.
My personal preference would be for much more forward-looking designs, reinventing car design for the 21st century ....but I guess they do have to deal with the realities of the market.
