I see it as a continuation or revival of the style. Much like in the re-introduction of quad-headlights in the 90's

I'm sure they didn't get the idea from Chevy :/

Id have to say, the W211 is a masterpiece in terms of its design, I dont think MB had a choice here but to go with cues coming from their W124, which is a legend of design and beauty ... I wish they would go back to one pice front headlamps, nothing against the quad oval ones, I just love the old school W124 headlamps' design ...

Well, as much as the MB enthusiasts will protest, I can't help but notice the frontal similarities to the Lexus GS, especially in terms of the lights. Also, it seems like the entire front will be a mix of the GS and Cadillac CTS.

Looks like MB's purposely making the E-class very squarish and 'rigid' looking so as to further differentiate it from the next CLS which will obviously maintain it's curvy-oso style. Well I guess people won't criticise MB for making the E-class a scale-down S-class, it's definitely going to be a stand-out within the MB line-up and also a stand-out within the E/5er/A6/etc category in terms of its design.

Most all luxury cars have simular designs these day which has been discussed many many time here.

This being the case it`s about interpretation and evolution of design within the family and how the designers make these qualities stand out.

Remember, the computer has all but become the eye of car design in the 21st century because the computer maximizes the efficiency of design in ways the normal human eye cannot see. Aero-dymanic, cabin room exc with body design all play a part with computer control to minimize space and materials used.

This efficiency controls the foundation of design. The human hand just adds his final touch to detail the end result. This is one of the main reasons cars
look alike these days.

20-25 years ago this was not the case at all. As cars were completely design by human hands (as the designs simply had more "soul") but the design work was no way near as efficient as thay are today.

Not really. For good or bad, the 3, 5 or the 7 doesn't look like anything else in the segment. Nor does the new Jag nor do Audis look like anything from other brands. While I like the new MB designs starting with the C, I do see some themes lifted from other companies - the side treatment in GLK, the wheels in SL etc... not that borrowing is bad by itself.

Not true, slightly similar they are, but the E class does not apear to look like any of the 2, the E class looks like it will have a much m ore agile design than the GS, and the headlamps design is mercedes-ish at both ends anyway, but looks like E-class will execute it in a more like one piece rather than 2 piece headline this time, which is not what u obviosly see on the front end of the GS, and the Cadi is no where to be compared here in similarity ......

Not in the luxury segment, but that do favor pontiac.

Jaguar yes, but Ford does have some similar looking cars to Audi. Some have mistaken Volvo's for Audi in some cases.

What other companies? Almost all companies have similar wheels. The Side of the GLk is a cross between the GL and G. Mercedes-Benz has been a industry leader since the beginning of the company. Of course most companies are going in similar designs because it aligning with the evolution of the automobile. Just look at 80's vehicles vs. 90's vehicle. You can almost tell the similarities.

If there is one company that knows and is an expert at copying design it's Lexus. Thankfully they are finally starting to shape up to using their own designs.

Yea, that is something GTA. I'm still amazed at why Benz goes square with the E-class instead of curves like the S-class. Guess Benz wants to give that job to the CLS. The E-class will still look great though.

Of course the S-class is still my "Benz of Choice".

LOL to amalgamate those two vehicles and come up with the E, you have a VIVID imagination Beemer. And then you go on to say that MB is making the E-class a scaled down S-class, when clearly the E has a rigid design and the S has followed the 'curvy' lot. I'm very very confused. And lastly despite looking like a hybrid of the GS and Cadillac...its going to stand out?
