Real late to this party, but I gotta question (EXCUSE ME if it's been answered, but there are 51 pages of replies on here)

My question is, is this the 2009 model that will be replacing the current E class (i.e. not a facelift but a makeover)? And is this scheduled for a fourth quarter 2008 release, or sometime in 2009?

Well in the U.S. it will be a 2010 model, not 2009, but yes the car we're talking about here is a replacement, not a facelift.

Lexus copied the W210's headlight design in their previous generation GS, so I don't think Mercedes take inspiration from Lexus for the design of the new E-class, it is just accidental that they took the same path of the design evolution. Having said that, I am sure both cars will look very different in the flesh. I can’t wait.

The real car will probably have an even bigger grill. I don't think it will have those ugly and pointless double fog lights. The rear 3/4 view of the car looks really sexy, hope it is accurate.
