Mirror problem on W208

Hello, everyone:

Out of the blue, and without any impact to the housing, my passenger side mirror has become loose. The motor still works, but the glass itself jiggles when the car is moving. I pressed it in firmly and this stopped the jiggling for a few days, but now it's back. Does anyone know how to repair this problem? Will it require a whole new mirror assembly? It's just amazing to me how time ravages everything. This car is 8 years old, has 31,000 miles and is always garaged, and things still spontaneously break .

Wow Doc, I never knew you had a CLK like mine! I don't know what to tell you about the mirror, it is probably going to require a trip to the dealer ($$$). I doubt if you'd need a whole new mirror housing though, try an independent shop first though. Have them tell you what parts you need and order them at the dealer and the indy do the repair. Just my suggestion.

Re: Mirror problem on W208

Thanks, Merc1:

I was planning to take it to a Benz shop run by a friend of mine, who is a trained MB technician. I thought I'd get a head start and prepare myself for the $$$ hit, in case it involved replacing the whole thing.

I thought people knew I had a CLK from my signature. This was my first Benz that I ordered in 1997 and took delivery of in July of 1999. I'm told it's one of a handful in FL that are silver with a blue top. I'm not planning to ever get rid of it, as it is a great convertible and hopefully will be a classic someday. Everything on it is original, and even the Xenon headlight lenses are still crystal clear. Thanks for your input.

Re: Mirror problem on W208

You might just need a new spring clip, or it just came loose.
You can't get the spring clip alone, but a paper clip works just fine.

Re: Mirror problem on W208

Sounds like something might be loose. Have your Benz dealer look at it and handle the problem appropriately. Shouldn't take too long so the repair bill shouldn't be too high.

Re: Mirror problem on W208

I remember a lot of MBs having problems with the mirror glass getting loose. You could fold the mirror in and then back out and it would fix itself. Not sure if this will work if it doesn't have power fold in mirrors. The mirror housing is designed to fold in manually. Give it a try. if no luck, take it to the dealer.
