Initially, Rover wanted to do an cheapo econobox replacement, but BMW and John Cooper wanted a sporty car, reminiscent of the old iconic/sporty/special versions. The exterior design was influenced by Issigonis own schetches.
And like all the previous replacents that were never put into production, the car is bigger.
And BTW the legend became a legend because of those special Cooper/S models, however the Mini was never intended to be an icon or a race car, it just ended up by accident.
If BMW would have made it like the old one, it should have something like a Daewoo Matiz, and build it in China or India.
