Well, I am a MB fan.
However, for me and from a theoretical PoV, BMW is undoubtedly the design leader of the three (even if I hate their look, it stands out and was an obvious inspiration especially for MB). Audi had a very pure design, but their strategy of copy-pasting the design with only one or two differences like the tailamps is showing a lack of new ideas. Usually one new idea every three or four car (new spaceframe grille. Then new interior. Then new rear design).
So I would say, the design leader is BMW, the usually more attractive car is MB, the most Germanic design is Audi.
All that seen with an "unbiased" eye, because personally I would rank MB first, Audi second, BMW third in terms of pleasantness of design.
Concerning the true classic, I think the most likely to get a "design icone" status in the history is the CLS. This will mark the history of MB, for me.
Another strong candidate is the e65 for its new ideas and unique design theme.
Concerning Audi I would say the first TT. | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to coolraoul For This Useful Post: | | | Contributor

If we are talking about styling then the true design leader in the group has been BMW. BMW's styling is expressive of the chaos, dynamism, speed, and disharmony of contemporary global culture; it is exciting, energetic, aggressive, and fascinating.
Audi is very in tune with what is happening at the elite levels of industrial design -- it is less about dynamic styling and more about an idealized expression of order and harmony. I find Audi design to be the most academic of the three ...perhaps the most intelligent.
Mercedes has followed the changing tastes in the market the closest ....they have adapted particularly to emerging trends coming out of the US. Mercedes is the one that seeks to make connections with its historical past through archetypal design elements -- BMW has the kidney grille and Hoffmeister kink ...but these are not used to evoke history like Mercedes does. Mercedes makes subtle references to its iconic models from the past through the use of stylized retro elements. | | | | | The Following 4 Users Say Thank You to SDNR For This Useful Post: | | | Devotee
