I guess even the Eiffel Tower was hated when it was built in the 1880s.

Well, skyscrapers were banned for a long time after the Montparnasse tower which was and still is criticized for looking out of place compared to its surroundings. After 36 years it's still a controversial building.

Excluding La Défense there hasn't been any skyscraper projects for decades. And even the skyscrapers at La Défense feel quite "modest" in real life (at least IMO).

Another great example of controversial architecture is the Centre Georges Pompidou (especially the rear side with the colourful pipes). This one you have to see in real life.

Centre Georges Pompidou is a fantastic building -- LOL. It was one of the first examples of what became known as "High Tech" architecture.

I guess this takes us a bit away from the 'modern' focus of this thread, but the Academy of Athens is marvelous:

The only problems are the flanking columns. The volutes are disproportionate, and the statues are way too big

And although the pedimental art isn't as animated as it could be, it's still magnificent. -- I do prefer the Nelson (type) Pediment, however. The 'relief-like' carving is unbelievable:

And because I have nothing better to do right now...

One of my favorites: the Temple of Athena Nike. Imagine what it must have looked like in its day!

From the Parapet. The wet-drapery effect is unbelievable:

Reconstruction of the Acropolis. The T. to Athena Nike is to the right of the Propylaea:
