Funny enough I went into a watch store and they had AMG and IWC Igenieur posters scattered, but the actual presentation of the companies watches were somewhat shab. AMG could have sold a good number of these in the states had they given us an alloacation... o well. | | | | | Fanatic

Sorry to be the cynical here, but you gotta love these little marketing gimmics that car companies do, especially MB.
They did something similar with Tag Heur I remember, and now this.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing to criticise here, it's simply a form of marketing. Co-branding is something MB seems to like doing, I guess because they have such high brand equity they can do it.
Even better here is the fact that no one losses out. MB gets increased profits from these cars because of their exclusivity. The watch company becomes associated with MB and its status, and the buyers get an exclusive car.
From a marketing student point of view, it's a great idea, but from a car enthusiasts view point, I'm not much of a fan of these 'pointless' limited edition cars.
* As for the $14,990 watch..... ummm... yesss.... what I would give to live 1 hour in your shoes, ..but kudo's to working your way to such a luxury lifestyle. | | | | | Connoisseur

Mercedes Benz can do whatever it so pleases w/ it's cars, gimmick, no gimmick - people eat it up. | | | | | Fanatic

Agree with you whole-heartedly there Stuttgarter. No matter how well BMW are doing with their strong sales success, and no matter 'if' BMW vehicles are better than Mercedes-Benz,....the one thing that BMW are yet to achieve is that lucrative 'iconic status' as you phrased it. (same applies to Audi as well).
Back to the car at hand, I'm just wondering why they've released this special edition model so early in its lifecycle. I can understand a car like this being released at the halfway mark or towards the end of its lifecycle, but the CLS55 hasn't even been on the market for a year yet.
...and how come this car wasn't atleast shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show to generate publicity for the watch company ..??
Nice looking car though..!! | | | | | Connoisseur

I believe they only made 50 of this edition. So in all truth and honesty, from a buisness standpoint, none of those things mattered as to when the car was being released... and publicity? Why? | | | | | Fanatic

..and I pose the question .."why not?".
It's a special car, why not let people know it. I'm sure it would not have taken any limelight from the S-class debut, but as they say 'any publicity is good publicity', so I don't see why not just show the car, rather than simply send out a media release like they have here.
This car makes me wish BMW Individual would make a "Maritime Edition" of the M5, like they did with the 760Li and Z4, because those cars just oozed with class, especially the interior. But i guess we won't see anything like that due to cost-cutting at the moment. | | | | | Connoisseur

55 made in total... check the article on the first page.... its simply for exclusuvity, i like the idea... as for gimmicks, i dont know.... people arent buying the car for the watch, its simply to market a more exclusive version of the CLS, which i like btw.
Bentley does it with Breitling... | | | | | The Photo Phanatic

Friggin sexy. I love the CLS. And driving the car is the best part. One of the few cars I've driven that seduces me everytime I get into it. Getting abused has never been so much fun! | | | | | Expert
