The styling of the Mercedes-Benz CLS still looks fresh to this day even though it's been on sale since 2004. It’s a look many of Mercedes’ rivals are rushing to emulate, with prototypes for Porsche’s upcoming Panamera, Audi’s A7 and Aston Martin’s Rapide all seen testing in Germany in recent months.

Now a test-mule for Mercedes’ next-generation CLS has been spotted, revealing a few subtle clues about the new model. It is expected to be launched in late 2010 as a 2011 model, and it will also be positioned more upmarket to bring it in line with some of its more premium rivals. This will also allow Mercedes to introduce a second four-door coupe model, rumored to be based on its next-generation small car platform.

The car will feature a wider track, as indicated by the extended wheel arches seen on this test mule, and according to insiders its platform will be borrowed from the current S-Class sedan flagship. The first prototypes are due to start testing late next year.

Man that car looks so sweet still..
I want to see the efforts from Lamborghini and Porsche, cuase if we where to make a poll of a 4 door coupes to date, most would agree that the CLS still is the best looking..
And somehow i feel that atleast porsche isnt gonna change it..
The only thing that looked better is the CS concept, but lets see what it turns out to be in real life..
And do not forget that we are comparing the merc to cars above its class

Said that i cant wait to see the new one, and its even greater knowing that its based on the S, wich means it will be even more up market than the existing one

Visually the CLS is still THE four door coupe, only the Rapide has an equally convincing profile and optical illusion of a coupe. finally we're starting to see some prototypes and they'll be rolling in full swing once the E is out. I see MB are going hard at it testing with a monstrous engine right away.

i have a feeling this is something entirely different than a test mule for the next CLS. Why would a mule have such a seemless, integration in that front wheel well and bumper. And then very little disguise on top of that. I mean look at the closeup, it is production type quality, paint and all.

I wonder if this is something akin to a Black edition, or if the AMG version will have the extra width in the front, much like the new C AMG does. I think it is a spiff up, late face lift to keep the car selling in its last two year of production.

There is something special about the CLS, that is for sure. I'm going to have to get me one sometime. The early cars are now rather reasonable...

Well the golden colour is not super popular so I guess MB chose it in an attempt to clear out the cans. Test mules are always tested with the same type of paint as production cars, this car is not an exception.

The rear is shaped like a traditional boot therefore the illusion of a coupe isn't as intense as with the Rapide and CLS. The car basically doesn't have the silhouette of a bow.
