I think most people, even when shopping in this class, tend to remain realistic and would probably find the E320 CDI a more appealing alternative. The E320 CDI is not a slow car by any means and the fuel economy is very good given its weight and performance capabilities. An E420 CDI will be marginally quicker and attain poorer fuel economy.
I could be wrong of course, but this is an opinion I formed while jobbing at the local MB dealership. Also, when in the big cities like Munich, you don't see E500's or E420 CDI's, you see E220 CDI's and E320 CDI's. So this has shaped my opinion about the buying habits of these folks.
