Mercedes-Benz says it will launch a revised A-Class at the Auto Mobil International show in Leipzig, next month. The announcement coincides with news that the A- and B-Class line-ups will be extended to include SUV and coupé derivatives.

There isn’t much to visually distinguish the A-Class from its predecessor apart from a new bonnet (if you look closely) and grille, altered rear styling and restyled taillights. The door handles and new, larger mirrors are now colour coded and it appears all base models will come fitted with 15-inch wheels and 16-inch. As was previously the case, the South African market will probably receive the five-door hatch variant, while overseas markets have a choice between three- and five-door models.

The A-Class will feature an ECO start/stop system on the two petrol models in the range, the A150 and A170, and BlueEfficiency – said to result in up to nine per cent better fuel efficiency in city traffic and less emissions. The A160 CDI BlueEfficiency model, in turn, is powered by a direct injection diesel engine so efficient; it will only consume an average of 4,5 litres per 100 km.

The interiors feature new upholstery and door trim. Avantgarde models receive brushed aluminium- and Elegance models wood trim. Other interior changes include a larger, centre console storage compartment and a redesigned cup holder.

The new technology featured on the new models include flashing emergency brake lights (to warn pursuing motorists in the event of a sudden stop or collision) and an optional active parking assist system to help drivers find a suitable parallel parking spot by measuring the space with ultrasonic sensors. According to a report, standard equipment has been expanded to include hill-start assist and Headlamp Assist.

The new Audio 50 APS infotainment system comes with Bluetooth, a colour display and DVD drive. The optional Comand APS navigation and voice command system includes HDD navigation, Music Register and SD memory card slots. A fresh media interface provides MP3 and USB connections.

According to Autocar, Mercedes-Benz head Dieter Zetsche has given the green light to a new development plan that will expand the A- and B-Class ranges to include a “baby” SUV and BMW 1 Series-rivalling coupé by 2011 as well.

The B-Class line-up will be substantially reworked to create a mini SUV to take on the likes of the forthcoming BMW X1, while the coupé (supposedly called CLA) will be aimed at the market dominated by BMW’s 1 Series and Audi’s A3 and the potential threat from Alfa’s 147-replacing Mi.To and Saab’s 9-X BioHybrid.

“We want to expand the A-class and B-class line-ups to at least double that of today’s levels. There is great sales potential in the addition of specific new models,” Mercedes-Benz chief executive officer, Rainer Schmueckle revealed.

The CLA is tipped at replacing the CLC, which is based on the old C-Class, in the long term and will be powered by a new range of four-cylinder, direct injection petrol and common-rail diesel engines that will be shared with other models in the Mercedes-Benz range, a source said.
