I've driven every single A- and B-Class diesel there is to drive (A/B160 CDI, A/B180 CDI and the A/B200 CDI) often experiencing the same car on more than one occasion with either the manual or CVT transmission (
Autotronic). The diesels are all very zippy, generally cultivated and very fuel efficient. The base '160 CDI is a very agile car. The engine is refined but it is the loudest amongst the A/B-Class diesels.
The '180 CDI and '200 CDI fare much better. You can still hear the diesel engine but it is a very muffled and low sound - it shouldn't really bother anyone. The engines are generally loud when cold, but the moment they warm up they become noticeably quieter.
Best pick of the bunch is the '200 CDI if you're looking for the best refinement and performance.

Nope. And the A- and B-Classes are not available in the US, but the B-Class is available in Canada. No diesels though.
