The classiest of coupes

Describing the development of the new 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL550 coupe, Lead Designer Holger Hutzenlaub does something people from Mercedes rarely do. He admits a mistake.

"We may have been a little too timid with the design of the previous-generation CL," he said. "This time around we wanted to make the car look more assured, more powerful, more...well...uh...." We can tell he wants to say something like "badass," but he settles on "confident" and moves on....

Read the review on Autolies first, strangely.

Having seen the CL in person, I have to say that seeing it upclose will give you a whole different view of the car. It's not porky but sleek and dynamic. I think the MB design team did a good job.

Before seeing the CL in person, I thought the "sport package" was mandatory, but now it may only be necessary. It is very sleek, very sexy and actually looks a bit smaller in person. The early detractors will be disappointed to realize that the the car does not look like a Solara nor does it remind you of an Acura in the rear. The CL looks less like a 2-door S-Class and more like a new creation from Mercedes. MB did a very good job, this time.

I a fan of the new CL but like most Benzs they don't do it for me either with out the AMG kit! CL 550 AMG!

anyone know when this car is suppose to be avaliable in the us?

A production car with a bespoke aura
And the new CL looks as good as it drives. We first saw it sitting in a room at the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart. Asked our opinion, we responded as we do to any static display: Wait until we see it on the road. We've now done so, and we can say that it's a stunning automobile and a huge step away from the stolid conservatism of the outgoing CL.

It has sloughed off its former aloof grandeur and replaced it with a sensuous, powerful presence that has us guessing that the Mercedes design team was holed up in an Italian villa during the design process. As finely woven and crisply creased as a bespoke suit from the finest Milanese tailor, the CL600 is a gorgeous compendium of everything Mercedes-Benz knows how to do with a passenger car. Bravissimo!
