Successful Production Start for the New Porsche Cayenne - 12-29-2006, 12:29 PM

Stuttgart/Leipzig.

Production of the second generation of the sporty SUV
Cayenne has got off to a successful start in the Leipzig factory of Dr.
Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.

Following the production of exact 150,371 units of the predecessor series in less than four years, series production of the new Cayenne model started in December. “The production start of the follow-up model has progressed to our full satisfaction,” confirmed Siegfried Bülow, factory manager at Porsche Leipzig GmbH. “The generations merged seamlessly.”

Porsche sold 34,134 vehicles of the all-terrain vehicle in the 2005/2006
financial year (to July 31). Despite the model change, Bülow is confident
of matching the previous year’s sales in the current financial year:
“Following sharp lifecycle-related falls in production in the last few
months, we are very confident about the new vehicle generation. We will
have raised Cayenne production back up to 180 units per day by the end of
February.”

As with the first generation, the bodies of the new Cayenne model will be
manufactured in the Volkswagen factory in Bratislava, while the majority of
engines will be delivered from the Porsche parent factory in
Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Assembly and quality inspection is performed at the
Leipzig factory. The manufacturing concept used to date has proven
exceptionally successful and it has only been necessary to optimize a few
cycles. Thus, for example, employees on the inspection line now benefit
from newly developed axle measuring technology, which uses a light
projector to generate three-dimensional scans of the surface of the wheels.
This high-quality measuring process makes it possible to generate
measurement results even more quickly, which are then used to implement an
exact chassis set-up for the Cayenne.

The second-generation Cayenne model stands out thanks to newly developed
fuel injection engines that deliver higher performance together with lower
fuel consumption. Fuel savings of up to 15 percent are possible in on-road
operation. In future, the basic version of the sporty SUV will be driven by
a 290 bhp (213 kW) six-cylinder engine. With a V8 aspirated engine with an
increased cubic capacity of 4.8 liters, the Cayenne S delivers 385 bhp (283
kW). The Cayenne Turbo’s eight-cylinder engine, which is powered by two
exhaust turbo chargers, delivers an engine output of 500 bhp (368 kW). The
new Cayenne will be at Porsche dealers from February 24, 2007.

That's not the greatest angle of the car in the configurator!

Even though the Cayenne isn't a good looking car at all, I've got to keep reminding myself that it funds great cars such as the 911 GT3 RS!

You know, I used to think the facelifted Cayenne was even uglier - but instead, it looks pretty damn good.

Still, I'd never get one without a diesel. Any SUV must have a diesel engine option for me - even a Porsche.

I don't like the front hood or the lights...also the rear window area. And I agree with wimmer that a diesel is the way to go if you are going to spend that kind of money on a SUV...which I am...

I think the F/L looks better than the pre F/L car, however subtle the changes maybe in retrospect. This is probably the only car (besides the Veyron) that I'd ever consider "wasting" my money on if I had the finances to do so. Blk/Blk w/ the smallest rims available please!!! Gotta love sleeper cars.

I can understand the reason why Porsche refuses to offer a diesel: there's never been a diesel Porsche except for the Porsche Diesel tractor. Also, it doesn't go hand in hand with their image, especially abroad.

I do think that the European market would welcome a Porsche diesel. It needs to be a fast one though, to sustain the Porsche image for speed. A nice V6 TDI from VW or a V10 TDI would be great.
