Who cares about road-off abilities. If I owned a Caynne I would never drive off the road.

True but then again they are becoming watered down too.

It's not really that I would use an SUVs ability often even though the United States has vast amounts of unpaved roads. I just don't see a point in an SUV if it doesn't have some form of offroad 'ruggedness' to it.

Problems with German SUVs in general:
1. They are expensive.
2. Scratch the paint and you'll be crying... because it's expensive to fix
3. Would you really want to drive your car in 1 meter deep mud?

If you really had to go for luxury and off road capabilities, then go for a LandCruiser. They are pretty luxurious and is one of the most legendary SUVs ever made. Taking a Porsche out into the woods is suicide.

The thing is most 'capable' luxury SUVs cost in the 30's, which is fairly close to the ML base. Your car can get scratched paint just sitting in the parking lot, if it doesn't come to DC . Your third question, well, why not? If it's capable and I felt the sudden urge to do something like that, to me it would be no different than owning an M or AMG and racing them from stop light to stop light or drifting onto an adjacent street. You are simply using the vehicle for what it was firstly intended for, and of course there is always a risk involved.
Surely the LandCruiser is one of the best SUVs of all time, but it's price also reflects that.
