![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Thread ![]() To reduce its carbon footprint and improve the fuel-economy of its some of its vehicles, Porsche is developing new hybrid technology with sister brand Volkswagen that’ll be available as an option on its next-gen Cayenne SUV and Panamera four-door coupe. The new Cayenne is scheduled for release in 2010 and should achieve a fuel consumption figure of just 26.8mpg (8.9L/100km). By contrast, the current version gets by with a fuel economy figure of only 18.2mpg (12.9L/100km). The information was revealed by Porsche’s director of hybrid development Michael Leiters in an interview with Automobilwoche. The next Cayenne is expected to be smaller than the current model, featuring shorter overhangs and will lose any pretensions of being a genuine off-road vehicle. Development work for the new Cayenne is being fast-tracked by execs at Porsche, including CEO Wendelin Wiedeking who’s worried about worsening demand for thirsty SUVs and rising oil prices. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Hybrid Porsche Cayenne to average 26.8MPG More from CAR: Most hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, struggle to top 15mph on battery power, making the petrol-electric Cayenne's electrified 75mph the most powerful hybrid system yet. But the hybrid Cayenne won't just be sporty, it's cleaner too. In a bid to answer critics of big, polluting SUVs, Porsche claims its greener 4x4 will average 'just' 240g/km of CO2, compared with 310g/km on today's entry-level model, the Cayenne V6. The new eco-friendly Porsche currently averages 28.8mpg, but Porsche is confident that it will hit 31.7mpg before production starts. That's some improvement - the Cayenne V6 manages a somewhat thirstier 21.9 miles on each gallon. CAR Online is reporting today directly from the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, where the first details are being announced. Log on later today for fuller details and the first riding impressions aboard a hybrid Cayenne. Porsche announces hybrid details - News - Carmagazine.co.uk M

The hybrid Caynne will take the price for the most pointless car ever. Let's face the people who'll buy it will be telling themselves; I want a car with exceptional handling. I kind of have kids so I want it to be practical. Half of my female friends drive SUVs so I want one to. I want low fuel consumption so hybrid is a must. IMO the hybrid in a 2.2ton Porsche SUV is as useless as a condom is to a married lesbian couple. There are sooooooooo many better choices for economical cars. The Cayenne doesn't only guzzle gas like crazy but it is one of the most expensive family cars out there. The whole idea of a hybrid car with a weight over 2 tons is a waste IMO. Oxymoron x 10 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Thread Porsche Cayenne Hybrid First Details ![]() Press Release It is targeting a decrease in fuel consumption of about 25 percent, particularly in city traffic Porsche, a company renown for its high-performance sports cars and sport utility vehicles (SUV), this week in Stuttgart demonstrated to the media a Cayenne SUV hybrid prototype, providing a glimpse of what the company will offer to consumers by the end of the decade. Porsche is targeting average fuel consumption figures of 9.8 liters/100 kilometers in the New European Driving Cycle and about 24 miles per gallon in the US FTP cycle for the Cayenne Hybrid, and future developments may allow Porsche engineers to push towards an average fuel consumption figure of 8.9 liters/kilometer (approximately 26 miles per gallon). The Cayenne Hybrid will feature a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the combustion engine and the transmission rather than having the hybrid drivetrain branching output along various lines and in various directions via a planetary gearset. Porsche selected this design because the in-line configuration of the hybrid components are more compatible with the existing Cayenne platform, this system in testing is more fuel efficient, and because this configuration is a better fit for Porsche as it will provide improved acceleration and engine flexibility compared to a conventional Cayenne. Coordinating the car’s three main components – the combustion engine, the electric motor and the battery – is the Hybrid Manager, the heart of the Cayenne Hybrid. The Hybrid Manager, which oversees some 20,000 data parameters as compared to only 6,000 data parameters for a conventional engine, is one of the most powerful technologies found in any hybrid vehicle. Other unique features of the Cayenne Hybrid designed to decrease fuel consumption include the power steering and vacuum pump for the brakes, as well as the air conditioning, which operate on electric power. Technical components, such as the oil pump in the Cayenne’s automatic transmission, have been replaced by electrically powered units. The Cayenne Hybrid’s electro-hydraulic steering – a first for a vehicle of its kind, will ensure the Cayenne Hybrid drives like a Porsche with predictable and safe handling characteristics and the agility that is expected of a Porsche SUV. Porsche plans to introduce similar hybrid technology in a version of its Panamera four-door Gran Turismo. The Panamera will debut in 2009, with a hybrid to follow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Source: WCF]
