Porsche is attempting to show its eco-friendly side at the upcoming 2007 L.A. Show on November 16, with the first appearance of the Cayenne Hybrid in America. Featuring a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine and the transmission, the Cayenne Hybrid consumes less than 9 litres / 100 km (approximately 26mpg). Comparatively, the standard Cayenne 3.6 V6 has an avg. fuel consumption of 12.9 litres / 100km (18.2mpg). Porsche intends to put the Cayenne Hybrid into production before the end of the decade.

Alongside the eco-friendly Cayenne, Porsche will display the electric-drive Lohner-Porsche from the year 1900. Considered as one of the world’s first zero emission vehicles, the Lohner-Porsche is equipped with electric motors in the wheel hubs and its the first time that it is shown at an auto show outside Europe.

The LA Auto Show will also host the North American of the new Porsche GT2. Equipped with a 530 Hp biturbo engine, the GT2 is the fastest production-911 of all times and it will be available as of February 2008 in the USA at a retail price of US$ 191,700.

what current Cayenne can achive 12.9l/100km? As someone said before, it's a 2.2ton car with huge engines! Gosh, i can't even achieve 12.9l/100km in a goddamn Volvo...

Re: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Thread

After showing off the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid prototype to journalists earlier this year, the German automaker has brought a production version of the SUV out for the public. Expected for delivery by the end of the decade, the new Cayenne Hybrid should see a 30% increase in fuel efficiency.

That means that Porsche, often accused by environmentalists for not wanting to make fuel consumption improvements to their vehicles, will put an SUV on the market getting roughly 26 miles per gallon.

But it was not just environmental concerns that led Porsche to create this vehicle. They claim that their full-hybrid design is more fuel efficient, and provides the driver with better acceleration than the current Cayenne.

"As both efficiency and perormance can be improved on the Cayenne with this system, it is the best fit for Porsche," a release from the company said.

Porsche positioned the electric motor directly between the combustion engine and the transmission, allowing the electric drivetrain to be more compatible with the Cayenne platform. A new onboard computer, dubbed "Hybrid Manager", constantly analyzes 20,000 different pieces of information to give the Cayenne Hybrid the best posssible performance.

Several different features in the car have been tweaked to help decrease fuel consumption. Air conditioning will now run on electric power, and a vacuum pump will be used in the braking system. Electro-hydraulic steering not only helps reduce use of fuel, but it also provides solid handling, according to the company.

Porsche also plans to make their hybrid technology available on the Panamera four-door Gran Turismo. The Panamera will be released in 2009, and the hybrid version should come out about a year later.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Thread

Cayenne Hybrid delayed until at least 2010

Porsche came out swinging at the LA Auto Show with a Cayenne Hybrid it said could do 75 MPH on battery power alone. Now the carmaker isn't sure it wants to fight that fight any more. Speaking of hybrid market share, Porsche's head of distribution said, "The most optimistic forecast still only calls for a market share of 5 percent." And in that case, Porsche feels it might not be worth it to bring out a Cayenne Hybrid until the introduction of the next generation in 2010.

They would then use that model as the litmus test for other hybrids. The Panamera might get a hybrid variant in 2011 -- two years after its introduction -- or it might not happen until 2013. In fact, since Porsche still has no firm date set for getting a hybrid to market, all of these dates could be pushed back indefinitely. Contrast that with Audi, which wants to introduce a hybrid Q7 by the end of 2008.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Thread

Good decision. It still don't like the idea of hybrid SUVs. That's like eating a gigantic meal at Mcdonalds, complimenting it with a diet coke and claiming that you're trying to eat healthy. I'm hoping that the next generation Cayenne will weigh slightly less than 2000kg.

What would you say Luw if Porsche made a very sporty diesel engine for the Cayenne?

Re: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Thread

This whole thing leaves a bad BS-marketing taste in my mouth. Why show it (as a production model) only to delay?!

Seems like they were trying to score some enviro-brownie-points... which implies a BS marketing strategy which insults my intelligence. Shame on Porsche for that.

I think a diesel is exactly what the Porsche Cayenne needs. The hybrid Cayenne will get better fuel economy within the city, but once you leave town the heavy and overpowered Cayenne will guzzle fuel like nobody's business.

A few years ago a diesel engine in sports car would seem unacceptable. Not anymore. Various diesel-powered sports sedans in Europe, notably from BMW as well as the Audi TDI LeMans victories have quickly changed that image for good. Porsche has access to great diesel engines (Audi/VW), so why not? They could get the current V6 TDI and V10 TDI from the Touareg and modify them in output, performance and character to suit the Cayenne. And you'd still get better fuel economy than with a comparable gasoline engine.

I agree. I really like to imagine what Porsche could make out of a diesel.
