In 1980-1981 a mechanic at Werks 1 saw spare 916 parts being stored there. He found a 914-6 with a blown engine and rebuilt it in Werks 1 using all the 916 parts. I have extensive documentation from the Porsche Factory and letters from Olaf Lang at Porsche (he is the head of the Porsche Museum). The car came to Florida around 1990 and the owner raced it in historic races. It had been stripped down to the bare chassis for a restoration when I bought it. The bank reposessed it in a divorce. I also got a 1978 930 which is being restored in New England now. When that is done, the 916 gets restored. |
Really interesting history. Thank you for sharing. I had stumbled on this piece of information that, as you also stated, only a small number had been built as pre-production cars and I remembered having seen the model number in your signature. Talk about a rare automobile. It can't get much better than that!
Edit: You mentioned the 930, I have concluded a deal today to get that 1989 911 Turbo RUF BTR. The last year they made the 930s. Not as rare as yours but still I am pretty excited to say the least.
Can't wait for them to finish putting new tires on and do the service so I can get it.
