General Motors will add a new high-output diesel engine to its Cadillac lineup, which will appear in the 2009 model-year CTS sedan. The state-of-the-art engine was unveiled today at the Geneva Motor Show and features new injection and combustion technology for low emissions and high performance.

Displacing just 2.9L, the clean V6 engine develops 250hp (184kW) and a massive 550Nm (406 lb.-ft.) from as low as 2000rpm thanks to electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger. The engine is being aimed at European markets where economical diesels are popular in the competitive luxury segment.

The engine’s development was spearheaded by GM Powertrain’s European operations in Turin, Italy, and in conjunction with diesel specialists VM Motori. VM Motori will build the new unit at its plant in Cento, Italy, and is responsible for the mechanical aspects of the engine’s design, development and bench testing. There’s a good chance that this diesel could also end up in cars based on GM’s Zeta platform and be sold in territories outside Europe.

Finally something from GM that is really, really relevant. This could be just what the doctor ordered for gaining some type of footing in Europe.

Definitely an impressive engine.

Yes. But still less powerful than the BMW 3.0 I-6 Biturbo Diesel.

This new GM V6 Diesel engine also will find its way to the next Vectra.

That's a very powerful engine, for a 2.9-liter displacing diesel engine. It has even more torque than the Mercedes 3.0 V6 (510 Nm).

This is quite an impressive engine, should find it's way into most of GMs products!

They needed it, seeing as their most powerful diesel is currently just 150bhp!

Wonder if this engine will go into the BLS, that car really needs something to get it selling!

Even if it does, the BLS won't sell well because of more power. The BLS simply doesn't offer anything of perceived value to European consumers.

Cadillac BLS = Saab 9-3

The reason why the Cadillac BLS doesn't sell at all, is because it simply doesn't bring nothing new to the table.
