Mercedes-Benz C-Class Models With Direct Injection The Most Efficient C-Class' Ever
Posted June 4, 2009 At 8:15 AM CST by T. Philips

Mercedes-Benz would like to remind you today that the new C-Class is the most economical C-Class ever. Thanks to three direct-injection models – the C220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the C250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the C250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY – you can enjoy fuel consumption of just 4.8 liters, 5.1 liters and 7.2 liters (per 100 kilometers), respectively. For my American readers, that's about 49 mpg, 46 mpg and 32 mpg, respectively.

Despite the impressive fuel economy, each of the models still boasts impressive performance. The C220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY features a 170 hp powerplant and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 8.4 seconds, the C250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY features a 204 hp powerplant and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 7.0 seconds, and the C250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY features a 204 hp powerplant and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 7.4 seconds.

Also, each of the engine variants can be had in either saloon or estate versions.

Before you get too excited, it's important to note that these figures apply to the European market, so if you're one of the many U.S. residents reading the site, your options are severely limited. Specifically, your best option at present is the C300, which features a 228 hp powerplant and fuel mileage of 18 city / 25 highway.

To learn more about the engine variants those residing outside of America get to enjoy, keep reading for the official press release.

Enjoy ladies and gentlemen.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

New Engines in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class: The Most Efficient C-Class Ever

Three newly developed engines with direct injection will make the Mercedes-Benz C-Class even more efficient. They raise performance and driving enjoyment to a new level, while demonstrating exemplary economy and environmental compatibility.

The new engines impress with a low fuel consumption, and therefore exemplary environmental compatibility, while delivering a high output and therefore outstanding driving pleasure. The new C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY saloon, the most efficient C-Class ever, generates 125 kW/170 hp and a torque of 400 Nm from a displacement of 2143 cubic centimetres. This accelerates the saloon from standstill to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds, yet the combined fuel consumption is only 4.8 litres of diesel per 100 km (corresponding to CO2 emissions of 127 g/km) - the best figure in this category.

The newly developed four-cylinder in the C 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY also uses direct injection. It achieves 150 kW/204 hp and offers 310 newton metres of torque. The saloon requires 7.4 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h with the new petrol engine. The combined consumption amounts to 7.2 litres per 100 km (CO2 emissions 168 g/km).

Key technical data for the new C-Class models

The new model variants of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class are available as both saloon and estate models.

Dear Mercedes,

0-60 in 7 sec. and 46 mpg in a $30k C-class would sell like hotcakes over here in the USA. But you just keep selling it in Cananda and other world markets and forget the ole USA.

knuckleheads.

We don't get them in Australia either. I wish they can just give us the real reason, and none of that fuel quality bullsh*t

They can't use the fuel quality over here. We've got the ultra low sulfer fuel now.

I think the C 250CDI will be offered in the U.S as the 2011MY along with the facelift ( major or minor , I don't know). One thing for sure is the price will increase. By how much ? $3000 more over the C300 ? What do you guys think?

Now would certainly be the time to bring over a C250 diesel. Diesel is about even with premium in my area. I've actually seen some 335d BMWs on the roads now too. Diesels are slowly catching on I think. VW's diesels can't be found at VW dealerships, they're all sold out. A C and GLK diesel should be a priority IMO. The 2011 facelift should also include a C350 Luxury model and 4Matic for the C350 and last but not least DI engines for C300 and C350. I saw a C350 4Matic on the road only to discover it had Canadian plates on it. I swear all the C350 Sport needs is a few tweaks to be a truly great car.

The 250CDI engine will be coming to America sometime soon, it will be in the C, GLK and maybe E. They are even thinking about the ML.
