The diesels sold in Europe in the '70s and '80s were pure junk too, to that arguement doesn't hold.

Start with the 6 cylinders first then we'll talk. Those will have a greater chance of succeeding than the 4 cyl imo.

Pfff, it doesn't even have 100 hp per liter. BMW's 123d does, and has been on sale for some time too. Then again, I think it's a bit unfair to compare MB engines with BMW engines, because BMW is the master of engine making.
It's a nice effort by Mercedes though
