Motor Trend - 2008 Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Sport: Driving gently toward 2020

I've been driving a Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Sport around Britain the past couple of weeks. It's a pleasant car: 17-inch AMG alloy wheels, bigger brakes all round, sports seats, and a swag of options, including something called the "Advanced Agility Package", which offers continuously variable rate shocks, paddle shifters for the five speed automatic transmission, sharper throttle response, and a sport mode button on the center console.

35 mpg? Quite frankly that is nothing great. I get nearly that in my 2008 E320 bluetec. A diesel 4 ought to touch 45 mpg.

Heck the old 3 valve 3.2 litre V6 gasoline engine used to get 30-31 mpg (US) on the highway. Mercedes needs to fire some engineers. They've consistently gone down in fuel efiiciency since 2002.

Well They certainly aren't doing themselves any favors (or consumers) by making their cars more and more hefty with every new model.

Unfortunately we can chalk that up to more technology and more safety. Everything adds weight, remember.

I wish they'd make (at least one) spartan car. No sat-nav, compensating suspension, radar cruise control, vibrating seats, folding roofs, etc. It would make the car as light as possible, and it'd get unbelievable gas mileage.

Re: Motor Trend - 2008 Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Sport: Driving gently toward 2020

35 mpg is about 6.7 liters per 100 km which is a little high for the C220 CDI. If driven properly it can get mileages in the low 6's or even high 5's - if driven properly. Then again, it is an old engine and I can't wait until the new 2.1-l diesel CDI engine from Mercedes sees service in a variety of vehicles. It is badly needed.

Absolutely. Imo the engine department is where BMW is absolutely troucing the competition. Who would have thought twin turbo's would do it for BMW?
