It's known now that the higher hood and blunt nose are due to new EU pedestrian protection regulations.

The larger outside mirrors are the EU's idea, also.

Yeah I know, and to Mercedes' credit they've done a hell of a job in meeting the standards without making the car ugly. The S-Class' hood is the best on the market balancing looks and function. Volvo, Lexus and others have hoods that look too puffy IMO.
