Mercedes has always marketed the CLK as a much more expensive/higher end 2 door coupe than the C-class sedan/wagon. As such, the CLK does not compete with the 3 series coupe from a pricing point of view. In fact, the CLK has been positioned between the C-class and E-class (actually closer to the E-class).

As such, I think Mercedes wanted to have a "sporty" 2 door hatchback to compete in the lower price range of the 3 series....hence the C-coupe.

Having said all this, history has shown us that not many people will buy a C-coupe.

I have to agree with most ppl here.......the c-coupe is quite disappointing, especially after the seeing the sedan and the changes made to that after the W203. There's really not much difference between the old one to this one except the front.

Talk about brand-dilution. The C-Coupe should simply be put to rest.

The C-class Hatchback was never designed to compete against the Audi A3 or the VW Golf. They are designed for badge snob MB owner wannabes who cannot afford to buy a C class classic. I have seen these cars driven on the road by girls, actually 100% of the C coupe drivers i have seen are girls, very bimbo looking type ones who thinks their little car is the best thing around. I think MB realised that they don't need this new C coupe to remain competitive. they just need to change the front and the back styling to appeal to these type of buyers.

The original C sports coupe was a half arsed job already, this one is even worse. Please MB just stop making the dam thing.

I think we need to wait and see what actually winds up coming to market. I can't see them just giving the old model a new front and calling it a day. Now does that sound like Mercedes-Benz? Heck no. The new sedan is about to come out as well as the new wagon so I'd expect a new coupe also, not a re-hash of the old model.

That said I too wish they'd just forget about it if they aren't going to make it a truly sporting piece. If this 1-Series Coupe looks the part this C Coupe won't stand a chance. It can't drive like a C-Class sedan, Mercedes didn't seem to grasp that with the previous model and there is the styling. Why not make it a real little coupe with 2-doors and a trunk like a smaller CLK/CL instead of a hatchback. A Mercedes is never supposed to be a hatchback, well beyond the A/B-Class cars they aren't.

I take it you're being sarcastic here right? The SLK is getting a facelift, not a half-done redesign. The SL I have no idea whats going on. They could be testing anything by bolting it to the current car before rolling out full next-generation SL prototypes.

Re: Spy pics: new MB C-class Sportcoupe - 02-15-2007, 10:37 AM

I think it is a grave shame that MErcedes are not going to base this car on a new frame. I know that the old car did not sell well and many resources were probably wasted by not selling many cars but if this is true and they are not interested in continuing any research or development into the car then why bother producing one at all? If there is no changes then these C-Class coupes are going to stick to the showroom floor like the old one, which is a shame because i for one like the direction it was coming from, there was something refreshingly different about it but i think that Mercedes needed to do a few things for the new model before releasing it. Firstly, they needed to structure, price and design it around the other leading contenders in the sporty hatch market, (if there is such a thing), like the 130i, S3 an then they may get some competition of sales. Secondly, they need to make an AMG version to compete with the cars above, maybe bringing back the old "36 AMG" engine and version.

If mercedes aren't interested then sales will still be low, this means they won't continue producing it and it is a shame because if some thought and development whent into the car the Mercedes coud potentially make a lot of money out of it.

Shame, shame

A RWD hatchback would be a more proper Merc than a FWD mini MPV like the A/B klasse.
Not having a proper hatchback can mean letting competitors to feed with those sales.
