Since the upcoming GLK-class has only automatic gearbox variants, and they all feature 7GTronic (even GLK 220CDI), I think it's safe to say that eventually the C-class will also drop the old & rubbish 5AT gearbox. But I think noone can tell you if that happens next year, or only in 2010 (when the C-class facelift is due).

In the case you wanna order a C-class now, consider getting C230 (petrol) or C320CDI instead of C220CDI. Then you can get 7GTronic now, and a much better engine either

In Turkey petrol prices are too high. I cant buy c320 cdi because of high tax rates. In turkey taxes are directly related with engine size.

Same as here in Hungary Then if I were you, I'd wait until next Spring, when the GLK220CDI is rolled out. Maybe if you wait until then, the C220CDI will also switch to 7GTronic meanwhile. Also there'll be a C250CDI (204 BHP, enermous torques, 7GTronic) that has the same engine size as C220CDI, so it won't be "more taxed" than C220CDI -- but a lot faster and a lot more exciting

The 'old' 5 speed auto is far from rubbish. It's flawlessly smooth, though of course not lightning quick. But it suits the engines it's mated to well.

Hmm I think I cant wait spring. When you chipped your engine, it means c 250 cdi but transmission is still old Will 7gtronic equip with c250 cdi in spring or is it a rumor ?

Yes you are true. Transmission and engine works together perfect. But I wonder how 7gtronic will work on c220. Consumption and accerelation values might be excellent. I think 7 gtronic might save %10-15 consumption rather than old 5 gear.

I have driven MB with both the 7 speed auto and the older 5 speed auto, honestly I couldn't really feel the difference between the two. Like Mr.Mercedes have said, the gearbox suits the engine.

I've driven C220CDI automatic and BMW 320dA, and the changes were far from "flawlessly smooth" in the Merc -- but it was very smooth in the BMW. Also, the Merc transmission is much slower, and has negative impact on fuel consumption. All BMW are on 6-speed Steptronic for 5 years now, and even the latest Mondeo (which is quite far from Mercedes quality or pedigree) implements a 6-speed Tiptronic. In such a "climate" Merc's old transmission is heavily outdated, and I'm almost certain it will be completely phased out in 2009.

And don't get me wrong: if Merc was bundling the old transmission only to the smallest engines (C180K and C200CDI), I wouldn't nag about it for a second. But they also give it for the C220CDI (which is the mainstream engine variant for C-Klasse here in Central-Europe), and you don't even have a choice, so you cannot pay 1000-2000 euros more to have a "proper" and cutting-edge gearbox... I tend to get quite upset when my hands are "tied down" like that. And that's the one thing that drove me away from buying a C220CDI/C200K this summer -- so I'll wait for the GLK220CDI until spring 2009, and hope to get the C220CDI or C250CDI with 7GTronic by then

i've read in multiple aussie car reviews that the 5-speed gearbox is nicely mated to the 4 cylinder engines.. but having drove the 200K and 220CDI, it's really far from good, especially when considering the price we pay for it. a DSG gearbox on a 30K Golf is better imo but it still gets the job done, albeit less smoothly
