It’s been known since the outset that the Bugatti Veyron would be limited to just 300 units, but what would come next has been an unknown. Reports are beginning to emerge, however, that the company is planning an all-new model for 2011 or 2012. Latest reports indicate the company could crank output up another 20% or more, from the current car’s 987hp (736kW) to 1,200hp (895kW) - enough to reach 270mph (432km/h).
Specifics on the new car are few, but according to
Autocar Bugatti CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen has announced the new car will be coming. So far the design priorities are that the car mesh with the company’s storied history and that it evolve the basic idea behind the Veyron. As Paefgen put it, “A totally different direction is not an option.”
Keeping the car in the tradition of the Veyron could pose some problems in terms of emissions and fuel economy standards, however, and that will be one of the primary issues the engineers will have to solve. Paefgen does not want to yield the essential nature of the cars anymore than he wants to see them go out of existence.
Engineering chief Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber also reportedly has said the car could reach 1,102lb-ft (1,494Nm) of torque with its quad-turbo W16 engine. That number marks an increase of about 20% over the current car’s 922lb-ft (1,250Nm), meaning a roughly equivalent increase in power at the same engine speed.
In another interesting twist, Bugatti’s boss also hinted that the company could take the new car racing, an activity that has been completely ruled out with the Veyron. What series or races the company might be considering are unknown, but Le Mans series racing and similar activities might carry the prestige and notoriety that would suit Bugatti’s image.
