I never though of the X5 as being capable off-roading... I remember watching an episode of TG once, when Clarkson brought the X5 out to the wild. It didn't really work... I think BMW wants to play more on the strengths of BMW: offering a sporty drive (on decent roads) and practicality like never before.

Sure you can drive offroad with a X5 but it aint best in class.

X5 has never been meant for serious off-roading. Already with the beginning of E53 Mk1 X5 development it was planned to offer "light" SUV with no seriuos off-road capabilities.

BMW therefore called X5 an "SAV" instead of "SUV". And that was a niche BMW wanted to fill: sacrificing off-road capabilities to gain on superb on-road performance.

Customers who are interested in X5 know very well what's the catch of X5.

X5 and X3 offer the practicallity of a station wagon combined with a more aggressive and trendy off road-ish look.
