It's quite simple:
Twin turbo = two separate turbochargers.
Twin-scroll = two exhaust gas chambers in a single turbocharger.

How efficient is this twin-scroll technology compared to variable vane tech?

And what are the pros and cons of the twin scroll over the twin turbo?

N55 turbo is made by BorgWarner while turbos in V8 X6 / X5 M (S63), V8 x50i (N64) and V12 760Li (N74) are made by Garrett.
N54 turbos are made by Mitsubishi, of course.

Btw, I'm amazed how early the max torque is achieved & how early power curve starts to be linear (at. 1200 rpm) ... And I'm sure there is some more space for improvement. Perhaps for the TwinTurbo TwinScroll M unit.

I'm sure there are some other monster engines in development. Especially the 6-cylinder M units.

Good to see BMW improve on their double World Engine of the Year Award winner.

However, as a performance enthusiast, I would have preferred to see N55 power / torque numbers increased and consumption / CO2 emissions stay the same (when compared to the N54) rather than same power / torque and lower consumption / CO2 emissions. Ideally BMW should have increased power / torque AND lowered consumption / CO2 emissions. imo, if you want the lower range torque then get a diesel, if you want lower consumption / CO2 emissions then get one of the new 3 or 4 cylinder turbo units. N54 / N55 are supposed to be the (non M) performance engines. BMW markets itself as the performance oriented German marque, I want to see BMW pushing past the 333hp/440nM of the Audi S4/S5 and surpassing its consumption / emissions figures.

Anyone know if BMW are planning higher power versions of the N55? Or are BMW concerned that a more powerful N55 starts getting too close to the S65?

Current N55 power/torque settings are in sync with N54 settings (x35i) ... that will eventually change in the future. As you can see N54 can be easily tuned to 326HP, and so can be N55. And much more coming ...

And right now more than higher power the lower emissions levels & lower fuel consumption is important. Marketing wise.

At least in civil (non-M) models.
