3 cylinders.. wow..
even x25i is a 1.8L I-4, 240hp/350nm is mighty impressive for that though.. but will we ever get the mighty bmw I6 roar again??
can't quite imagine the full lineup..

The big question is whether the I3 engines will be made using a longditudally or latidudally cut six cylinder engine.

A 3-cylinder engine in 3-series just sounds somewhat wrong...

The 3 Cylinder engine is the basis for the smaller platform mild hybrids.
Such as the entry level 1er and Z2. These engines are currently testing now in order to have them ready for the next 1er introduction so that BMW are ahead of the competition.

Recently there was an R&D and BOD evaluation of these cars @ BMW's test facility in Germany and there is great progress taken in having them ready for the streets , Norbert Reithofer has stated many times that he does not want BMW to talk about achievements like this but actually produce them.

I know one thing: I will never, I mean NEVER, buy a 3-cylinder car, even if this is a BMW. Some things are to holy to change....

Im with Norbert on this one, I3 engines are really nothing to talk loud about. It's like riding a moped, good fun as long as no one knows about it.

Geez, guys. EU directive regarding consumption & emissions are very strict ... And no company can't afford to pay penalties - since that would be very damaging in the long run.

ALL major car companies will reduce average fleet consumption & emissions: by introducing very clean & efficient small cars & engines. Like I said many times: the trend is to introduce engines with less cylinders & lower displacement yet turbo charged (or supercharged) ... most possibly with some hybrid components like electro motor for extra power boost during acceleration.

So, BMW is no exception. So, expect 1er & 3er based models, X3, and even entry 5er models with some extremely small engines - all to meet the future standards.

But you'll still have a choice to buy eg. a 6-cyl or 8-cyl engine etc. But in the future ALL V8 and bigger engines (and most probably 6-cyl engines as well) will be paired with hybrid tech.

Times are changing ... there is no way back. The sooner will you accept that the better for you.

But be sure BMW won't sacrifice any performance due to new tech - even the opposite: EfficientDynamics is all about sporty performance combined with clean & efficient tech. So, be sure even 116i with some funny little engine will still be top among similar cars in the segment.
